I think people either like Nicholas Cage or hate him. Personally, I fall into the camp of 'like'. Snake Eyes, 8mm, Leaving Las Vegas, all great movies. He has done a few stinkers over the years, like Con Air and Face-Off..but generally speaking I think he is one of the better actors in the business. Any guy who names his son Kal-El can't be all bad..
In his latest film, an independent production that flew under the radar, Nic Cage stars in a movie called 'Joe'.
The story sounds very typical, and it is, in a manner of speaking. A grizzled ex-con with a drinking problem is trying to get his shit together and tow the line, but finds himself in a crisis situation where breaking the law again is the only solution available in order for him to 'do what's right'.
The thing that sets JOE apart are the amazing performances by the entire cast in this movie. You don't feel like you are watching a movie, it feels like you are thrust into the lives of these people as an omniscient observer. From southern drawls, to costume and set design, the film has a an incredible element of authenticity to it.
The credit for this goes out to Cage and the entire cast including Tye Sheridan (Mud) and Ronnie-Gene Blevins ( The Dark Knight, Seven Psychopaths). Most notable, however is the performance of Gary Poulter as the alcoholic, homeless drifter ' Wade' aka Dawg.
The whole time I'm watching this movie, I am looking at this character on screen and thinking, this guy looks like a real transient and drunk. What an acting job..wow.
Well it turns out that Poulter actually was a local homeless man whom director David Gordon Green selected for the film. No wonder his performance is so damn convincing.
Tragically, Poulter died a mere two months after completion of the movie in the streets of Austin, Texas.
Other than a bit of a confusing conclusion, this film rates high imo. Another Indie film that far supersedes most of the big money tripe that comes out nowadays.
    Well worth seeing.
    8/10 stars

8MM was a decent movie, but Cage was just boring
Joaquin Phoenix was the interesting character

I see all your Nick Cage references, and raise you:

    Ghostrider 2: Spirit of Vengeance.

Behold and weep, for you will never get that 90minutes back.
