Wallmart would not be so powerful if so many people didn't want to shop there. The reality is that there are not enough people who are sentimental about 'mom and pop' stores selling the same low-to-medium quality goods at higher prices to keep them all in business.

Walmart isn't a monopoly by Adam Smith's definition. There are other reasons to believe it causes harm, but that isn't one of them.
