    Default 2010 Winter Olympics Thread

So, as we all know the Olympic games don't start until February..but the most important event (Men's Hockey) is centre stage up here in Canada today as the roster for the men's hockey team was officially announced by GM Steve Yzerman and co. at 12 noon.
No surprises in Goal, Brodeur as the likely starter with Luongo and Marc Andre Fleury as his backups.
We are fortunate enough to have many skilled forwards and defenseman to choose from, so the real question is not who did make the cut, but who didn't, I guess. The team is young, mobile and skilled beyond most countries wildest dreams.
Notable players who did not make the cut: Dion Phaneuf, Jay Boumeester, Martin St.Louis and Jeff Carter ,,among others.Even the NHL's leading defenceman in points, Mike Green, did not make the cut. But this is not an all-star team, this is a team that is meant to be well rounded and tough on the opposition.A team meant to win a Gold Medal..
Scott Niedermayer was named Captain while Iginla and Pronger were named Alternate Captain's.
I am happy Mike Richards made it, even though the Flyers are not having a great year. I am sure he will do well and grind out the opposition as he is expected to.
I am a bit dissapointed tto see that Ryan Smyth is not going to be going to the games, but he is getting older and is injured often. He has had a strong presence for Canda in International play and I will miss him.
Russia is expected to give Canada the stiffest competition for the Gold Medal. But I never count out the Swedes either..although I don't think they have the goaltending this time out.
None of the other events mean that much to me, but I will watch lots of them. I like watching Skeleton (now THAT takes courage !), Downhill Skiiing and many other events. But obviously, Hockey is the event every Canadian is dying to watch.
Anyone else looking forward to this?

I used to follow hockey for a while. But there's just too damn many games. There's what? two months of the year without hockey?

You are missing the most important aspect of the Olympic games.

Canada's socialist history of oppressing it's people with national health care. I'm hoping that the US's GOP uses it as an appropriate stepping stone to politicizing the games and totally ignoring any achievements in athletics and sportsmanship.

Plus, everyone knows your Canadian Hockey players are the results of a breeding program wherein children (children mind you) are forced into competing with one another for hours out of every week as soon as they are able to skate in the hopes of producing just a few champion players. God damn commies, everyone of you.

Our healthcare system may not be as shiny as yours, but just imagine in you had to pay for your own leeches.

I like the winter Olympic sports but the UK doesn't usually make much effort. It shouldn't be that damn hard for us to put on a better show, we only have tiny ski fields of our own, but we do have them, and it shouldn't be that much effort to send people to train in the Alps.

There are some ski resorts in Scotland. Aviemore is the most well known one.

I don't know much about skiing, but I think they're smaller and have less reliable climates compared to the main European resorts in the Alps or your resorts in the Rockies.

Yeah, well, just wait til climate change comes. You'll be skiing a-plenty. Or not at all. Depends how it changes.
