I think the ribbed, gothic-style plate was pretty mace-proof.

Precisely. For dealing with heavy blunt trauma, you need a surface that's going to deflect the impact off to one side or another. That's why helmets and breastplates are all curvy like that.

    Guess what? More gloves.

These an old-ass project from when I was first learning to make maille, and posting this thread inspired me to take a picture of them.
There's no thumb because I couldn't figure out how to make thumbs back then. At some point, I'll try and finish them out/make new fingerless gloves.

    They were an early project.
Flat chainmail works best if you use other other metals (copper, brass, etc.) to break up the monotony of gray mesh. It accomplishes the same affect as the leather does in other projects, which is giving you a contrast of colors and textures.

    Nyah hah, made another pair:

Someone on Etsy comissioned me to make replicas of the gloves Big Boss wore in Metal Gear Solid 3. They're a pair of Belgian military gloves (that's right, muthafuckin' BELGIAN) which I hacked at with a chainsaw until they looked right. They look kinda frumpy just on the desk like that, but I assure you, they look pretty sweet when actually worn.
For comparison, here's a shot of the gloves from the game:
