    The President can only veto the measure if it's not supported by more than 2/3rds of the Senate. Assuming the House votes for it by the same majority, then it gets passed over the President's head.

    Which I sure hope it will.

    He can veto anything he likes. The veto can then be overridden.

    Per CNN:

    McClellan said existing law already prohibits the mistreatment of prisoners in American custody, and the amendment "would limit the president's ability as commander-in-chief to effectively carry out the war on terrorism."
    This makes me wonder about the White House's reasoning. If the amendment is duplicative, then it's already against the law to do it. But it's then stated that it would limit their ability to carry out the war on terrorism. Sounds like they're saying they need to be able to violate the law. :icon_thum

    It could mean that what is defined as "torture" which is already prohibited, might be expanded to include legitimate interrogation techniques used now.

    That is my biggest problem with abu-ghaib, not because I give two shits about some sexually explicit pictures taken of the enemy by a handfull of depraved and sick individuals who are bieng, and deserve to be disciplined for thier actions;

    but because of the backlash that was caused by that and that it might inhibit us from using legitimate interroation techniques (torture is not one of them, when it is illegal or not- this is proven as it yeilds unreliable information that is more likely given to tell the tortruer what they want to hear, rather than the truth) that might be harsh, or unpleasant, but not torture, but it gives the pantywaists who oppose anything but giving suspected terrorists free cable and a room at the waldorf an excuse to challenge legitimate interrogation techniques by creating a public outcry so people think everything but pampering them is torture.

    Interrogation is cool. Asking if you can DO interrogation is a surefire way to get rid of an army recruiter.

    Unfortunately, it is true that a lot of people confuse what torture is, or rather, give all forms of interrogation equal weight.

    So yelling VERY LOUDLY AT SOMEONE gets to be the same as pulling out their fingernails while a dog munches on their balls at the same time. Making a Muslim captive think you put menstrual blood on him gets to be equated with a rifle butt to the face. Making a guy feel sad because you tell him that he'll never see home again if he doesn't cooperate gets equated with threatening to kill his family.

    How about banning torture at home first?

    American Idol would be better if it was called American Idol: America's Toughest Motherfucker, and instead of singing they all fought to the death.

    Unfortunately we can't vote on how he should act.
