Everybody is going to die, correct.

But the global population's going to keep increasing for decades. As are literacy rates and average life expectancy.

DONT PANIC ITS JUST A LEFT WING CONSPIRACY!!! (https://www.newscientist.com/article/2208331-climate-change-made-europes-heatwave-at-least-five-times-more-likely/?utm_medium=SOC&utm_source=Twitter#Echobox=1563968368)

It's not a left-wing conspiracy. Prince Charles and John Selwyn-Gummer are really delighted to have tricked liberals into supporting regressive taxation that's used to subsidise land owners.

You can tell it isn't a real scientific article by the way they portray 2000 years as geologically significant.

ITS ALL A HOAX THE WORLD IS ONLY 4000 YEARS OLD!!! (https://www.theonion.com/thousands-of-polar-bears-washing-up-on-nation-s-beaches-1836682553?utm_medium=SocialMarketing&utm_source=Twitter&utm_campaign=SF&utm_content=Main)

If the world was only 4000 years old, then 2000 years would be a meaningful slice of climate data. But it's not.

Are you sure that climatology is a dicipline within geology?

A cursory examination of the History channel will show that many cultures have died out due to climatic changes over a generation or two

Cullion
26th July 19, 10:33 AM
If you're attempting to distinguish human from natural effects, you need to look at geologically significant timescales, yes.

What makes you say that

Natural conditions can cause clinate change over centuries or even decades

Linking geology and climatology is a red hering

Cullion

You haven't pointed out a flaw in the argument. You can't distinguish forcings without being aware of all the different cycles. Many of them work over timescales of tens or hundreds of thousands of years.

Sure, many of the natural processes play out over eons

Others over milenia etc

Some, like Krakatoa happen in an instant

Maybe we should just focus on real pollution like urban particulates and radioactive waste instead of tirelessly looking for ways to justify regressive taxation ?

Oh boy that would be GREAT!

I do wonder about my facination with the potential collapse of Humanity.

I think its impatience at the moment about not expanding the Biosphere off planet. I like to remind people how fragile it all is & then like a proper Evagelist explain to them that our destiny is to populate the Solar System with life!

Recently had some Eco-Socialist friends gettiing quite upset when I said that I think unbounded growth was a good thing.

I think people fantasize about the end of the civilization because on some level they'd be secretly relieved if the whole idea of 'jobs', 'christmas shopping', 'rent' etc.. all just came crashing down and we were left raiding the husks of supermarkets for tinned food and spending the rest of the day driving around in stolen cars drinking, fucking and setting fire to things at random.

Don't say it hadn't crossed your mind.

The grim reality is that the world's not going to end. We're not going to be punished with ragnarok for heating our homes in winter or taking the car instead of the tram to work. We're all just going to have to keep showing up and paying the bills.

When I was younger I really liked the whole Mad Max ethic. Most of my 20s was spent with groups that to my mind had the best bet of surviving in such an apocalytic world. I still think to this day that should such a catastophe happen that travellers & hardcore Burners have a way better idea how to survive than the vast majority of the general population.

I dont buy into it anymore though, I'm far too unreasonably optimistic about Humanity's potential. I think advances in medical science are ushering in Transhumanism & that we have the capability (if not the political will) to expand into Space.

Excuse me? I have a 5-acre fenced property, it even has a moat on one side, with good visibility and a flat roof to shoot off of.

I will survive the zombie apocalypse longer than most y'all.

Best odds of surviving Z-day

1) People who work in out of town petrol stations; slightly remote, vehicles, fuel and plenty of long-life high calorie food on hand, usually an anti-robbery screen.

2) People with access to fishing boats, especially if they live on a small island.

3) Navy personnel at sea

4) Catholic priest (depends on the cause of Z-day, may be one of the first to go if exorcism not effective as they spend time around the dying)

I've been thinking about this for years
