View Full Version : Speeding Fines...Snagged !!

OZZ
29th March 15, 06:43 PM
I had just said to myself " Geez...you are pushing it man, you better slow down.."
Less than two minutes later...OPP SUV at the side of the Highway ..SNAGGED !
Fuck.
I was on my way home from Toronto, happy as hell, listening to Sting and The Police Greatest Hits. Then it all comes crashing down.
I was doing 148 km/h on a 100 designated highway; 2km/h more and I would have been bagged for sport racing speed and had my car taken away.
As it sits now, I got 4 demerit points and a $332 fine.
Insurance will be going up for sure.
I am going to fight it, go to court..because 90% of the time you get at least a minor concession of some kind when you challenge it. Mrs. OZZ does it all the time, and if you get really lucky and the cop doesn't show up for court for some reason - you get off completely.
I don't give a shit about the fine, but the demerit points is going to cost me hundreds of dollars in insurance premiums.
Just so you guys know, I am not a reckless driver. Yes, I like to drive fast, but I rarely go as fast as I was today. I was just trying to bypass a bunch of transports who had me boxed in and when I come around the bend BAM !
Cops usually give people a break and take a few clicks off for them to reduce the fine.
Unless you are an ex con who has a CPIC come up on screen with the ** CAUTION ! VIOLENCE** warning , a rap sheet that is quite lengthy and a very nasty looking blade with a bone handle affixed to your passenger sun visor ( a precaution against car jackers !)
Like I said, FUUUUUUCK !!!

Your screen name is Officer Peppa..and you are a squealer and crybaby.
And you love cops...
No, really ???

Not that I really give a shit what you think, but there is a difference between driving fast and driving dangerously, that is why they are distinct under the law.
My driving falls into the latter category.

A 'social' navigation / GPS app where folks post real time updates regarding speed trap / police locations, accidents, etc.

I am thinking about getting a police scanner too.

I used to have one, they change the codes all the time so they can become a useless tool very quickly unless you are very good with them.
I had a radar detector years ago, but it got taken from me by the cops.

Bullshit. I drive a car designed for the autobahn capable of traveling very safely at speeds well over 100 miles per hour. I drive this car on sparsely traveled highways designed for speeds over 90 miles per hour.

Do you think a 2012 car is probably a bit safer / better handling than the vehicles the highway was designed for in 1970 to travel 90 miles per hour on?

Maybe?

The speed limit on the road in question? 70 miles per hour.

So fuck off. These speeding tickets are revenue generation. That is it.

Fuck Yeah !

I um... got so many speeding tickets the first half of last year that if I get one more before May they suspend my license. (7 I think, some fucking WA law, got out of twice as many)

Got a better detector and use Waze on my phone. Works good so far. Can't wait until May. This has impinged on my religious satisfaction.

This is my first speeding ticket in about eight years, believe it or not.
Like I said, I am usually quite smart about it and pick my spots well.

FREE Booze at the game compliments of the Platinum Club.

All courtesy of my bud's wife and her corporate gig at The Keg ( she won the tix at a company golf tourney and dinners are always free )
All I had to pay for was $7 parking and a tank of gas.

You like to think you are logical. You need actual facts to come to a conclusion, NoB.

http://brainonboard.ca/human_factors/speeding.php

Here are a few:

"In Canada, speed is a contributing factor in up to 18% of crashes resulting in serious injury or death. Overall, it is estimated that 20% of collisions occur as a result of speeding (TIRF 2007).Speed not only affects crash risk (an increase in speed of 1% increases the risk of being involved in a crash by 4%), it is also directly related to crash severity (TIRF 2007)."

"n a recent TIRF survey, 17.2% of driver reported that they would feel comfortable driving the speed limit or faster in heavy rain on a highway if their vehicle had modern safety features, compared to 11% who reported that they would feel comfortable doing this in a vehicle without safety features. This is a concerning result, since safety features cannot be safely relied upon to compensate for excessive speed.
Despite the advanced engineering that goes into the development and production of current safety technology, speeding can have a considerable negative effect on the performance of vehicle safety features in two ways: speed can make severe crashes more likely and make it more difficult for safety features to protect you in the case of a severe crash. To illustrate, noticing a hazard that requires emergency braking two seconds before a collision will give a driver enough time to slam on the brakes, have brake assist (http://brainonboard.ca/safety_features/active_safety_features_brake_assist.php)engage, and stop in time if the driver is going 50km/h. However, increase the speed to 65km/h, and a collision will be unavoidable even with brake assist."

Lol at NoB's insistence on words like 'primary'. How about 'core' would that work? Or do you want to play the semantics game some more?

But the evidence is there.

And here:

http://www.smartmotorist.com/traffic-and-safety-guideline/excessive-speed-is-a-factor-in-one-third-of-all-fatal-crashes.html

Or perhaps the World Health Organization:

http://www.who.int/violence_injury_prevention/road_traffic/activities/roadsafety_training_manual_unit_2.pdf

Page 30 says it best:
SpeedThe speed of motor vehicles is at the core of theroad traffic injury problem. Speed influences bothcrash risk and crash consequence (Box 2.2). Thephysical layout of the road and its surroundings canboth encourage and discourage speed. Crash riskincreases as speed increases, especially at roadjunctions and while overtaking – as road usersunderestimate the speed and overestimate thedistance of an approaching vehicle.Drivers’ speed choice is influenced by anumber of factors that can be considered as:• driver-related factors (age, sex, alcohol level, number of people in the vehicle);• factors relating to the road and the vehicle (roadlayout, surface quality, vehicle power, maximum speed);• traffic-related and environment-related factors(traffic density and composition, prevailingspeed, weather conditions).

How 'bout this one:

http://www.mvs.net/pdf/contributoryfactorstoroadacc4782.pdf

My favorite part was when they say 28% of all fatal crashes involved excessive speed.

Üser Friendly
21st April 15, 11:51 PM
Again, you are posting things that say 'Influences' and 'risk' versus 'causes'

How many 'speed kills' type crashes also involved other factors such as ambient light, weather, vehicle quality, winding roads / blind corners / alcohol, etc.?

I would wager most of them. They aren't likely to publish a study on that though, are they.

Fucking control freaks. Unless your idea of fun is saving the whales, posting trigger warnings, or supporting the arts, you are doing something wrong. Now get those vegetables out of your front garden

OZZ
22nd April 15, 09:07 AM
NoB - are you actually trying to argue that speeding is not a major contributing factor in highway crashes/fatalities ?
For someone who prides themselves on logic, you certainly are a stubborn ass when confronted with it.

Driving dangerously ( swerving in and out of lanes without signalling, cutting people off etc.) is more of a factor than speed, but speeding is definitely a contributing factor, especially among inexperienced drivers who can't control their vehicles around curves or don't know how to handle a difficult situation and keep a cool head.

Feryk
22nd April 15, 10:12 AM
NoB is being deliberately obstinate: he likes to speed and doesn't want to consider that doing so dramatically raises the odds of him or someone else dying due to his behaviour.

In answer to your question, there are SHITTONS of studies about distracted driving, poor weather conditions and all the other factors that contribute to accidents.

Doesn't ameliorate the fact that excessive speed reduces your reaction time and increases the kinetic energy involved - thus increasing the likelihood and severity of an accident.

And you know it. So stop being a fuckwit.

If I'm overtaking on the motorway I may go 5km/h over the limit just to zip past but it's rare that I need to do that. If you have good spatial awareness, reflexes and common sense it's not difficult to move within the speed limit while ensuring the safety of yourself and other drivers.

We can take your argument to the an absurd level to expose the flaws, just by advocating 15 mph speed limits everywhere. It would be much safer, especially for pedestrians.

Again, I am not saying folks should be speeding through populated areas or on busy streets.

However, nice, straight, mostly deserted divided highways designed for higher speed limits than the ones posted now should have limits re-evaluated. (like they did in Texas) Cops should not be patrolling those highways as there is not a safety risk. It is just easier for them to pull in the dough on those highways. They should be patrolling the areas where speed will kill.

On my highway commute:

All traffic is going the same direction. (divided highway)
There are no pedestrians.
There is very limited traffic and great visibility.
There are 2 lanes in each direction and safe places to pull over the entire stretch of highway.

The speed limit should be higher on that road. If you disagree, you are wrong. And a control freak. And possibly a socialist. And probably hate freedom. But the german box system should be applied on all roads with unlimited or high speed limit. You get caught in a box too close to the car in front, fined and points on the paper.
