Let the games begin.
Greece V Colombia on Saturday at noon; that will be my first viewing.
I really wish Scotland could get back into this thing, and Canada.

Not been really following football lately but now I will not escape the Mundial talk.
I'd like to see a S. Korea vs. Italy with a normal referee to partially soothe the 2002 ass threading.

for now, [email protected], typical

I know everybody will say Greece was going to lose against Colombia anyways, but there were a TON of fouls against the Greek players today that were not called. The ref pulled two yellow flags on the Greek team and I don't think one was called against the Colombians. The basically ran over the Greeks all day...it was horrendous officiating. Many offsides seem to go unnoticed as well. This sport needs to get with it and add another ref and start using video replay.
If Greece had scored on that header that went off the crossbar early in the second half, its a different game. Unfortunately people will just look at a 3-0 score and think the game was all Colombia, but the game was pretty close for the most part as far as possession and shots.
Italy V England is on right now, today's big game. Italy leads 1-0..

AAAAAA
14th June 14, 07:22 PM
That was close... Italy won it in the mid field. Really good movement of England forwards. Fuck Hodgson for selling Pirlo to AC Milan in 1999.

Italy won despite having some key players out.
Rooney really seems to choke at the World Cup for some reason.

Germany V Portugal should be a good one..
Interesting tradition on display from the Japanese fans :

Germany trounced Portugal today..that team relies too much on one player.

I didn't post here my prevision of Portugal getting steamrolled, because I though if I was so sure I'd had better put money on a bet. Which I didn't since I was going only on feeling, not having followed the teams lately... but honestly, Portugal winning the Euro championship was ridiculous enough that they subsequently won't win anything else for a long time. Like Spain.

My outsider, always on a feeling (didn't even watch the game), would be Colombia.

I think the Americans are much more sorely missing the striking threat of Landon Donovan than they probably thought they would.

Too much of that match was played in their 65

Angry Mandrill
17th June 14, 02:07 PM
their striking was not lacking. their ball control was just fucking nowhere. every time they touched the ball ghana took it away. and we were sloppy with the ball, too. we are very lucky ghana couldn't shoot for shit. my son looked it up at one point late in the game and ghana had had something like 20 opportunities but only 8 shots on goal. us had had 7 opps and 7 shots on goal.

OZZ
17th June 14, 02:21 PM
Bottom line is that the USA will not get away with that kind of play against the other teams in their group.

Oh, and my bad, Canada's last game against the USA ended in a scoreless draw. Although our all-time record is a respectable 8W 9D 13L vs the US and 6W 3D 9L vs Honduras.
Yes, it sucks consistently failing to qualify for one of the biggest sporting events on the planet. We don't spend nearly enough money on our national program despite major increased interest in the sport over the last twenty years ( mainly due to the immigrant factor).
However, give it another decade or so and I think you will see our team getting in regularly. All these immigrant's kids who have soccer in their blood will eventually spill over into the national program's talent pool.

The Jozy kid they replaced Donovan with isn't going to draw the level of respect, which will affect every touch, the entire match.

As for them being sloppy, honestly they seemed ill-trained for the wet and humid environment....way, way too many cramped leg injuries....which is odd considering Klinsmann is the coach.

But for that kind of weather you need a very scientific preparation I've heard, just working hard isn't any good.

The times I've played in humid environments, versus the hot/dry/arid environment I'm used to, my legs get "heavy", for a lack of a better description.

Klinsmann should have taken them from the moderate Mission Viejo and Stanford University and SF Candlestick Park training camps to somewhere like New Orleans.

That's implied. A working-class, punkish, childhood fan making it to first team and National, doesn't get much better.

Afterwards he went coaching abroad in places where nobody wanted to go as he was considered too unrefined. I think at some point he ended up in Romania, won the national league and fucked the daughter of the team's president.

On the other hand with clement weather they were able to work more. I guess there's some specific work to be done for endurance in low-heat-dissipation conditions.

The team had a daughter and that daughter had a president that he fucked? Did the team make a sperm cocktail and inseminate a fan or what?

Or did you mean fucked the president of the team's daughter?

I am equally befuddled over why you seem so interested in endlessly arguing with a deluded creationist who shuns rational thought process in favor of a storybook-bedtime belief-system.
I would suggest that watching a bit of soccer may constitute a much better use of your time.
And be infinitely more enjoyable.

Look for Greece to bounce back against Japan today.

Spain was on top of the soccer world for the better part of the last eight years. It had to end some time.

Spade: The Real Snake

For only *REALLY* having a legitimate top-tier league system in place for 20 years, Japan has really moved forward, in terms of international play.

OZZ
19th June 14, 06:59 PM
That was a boring game..as most 0-0 games usually are.
Greece played a man down for the majority after their captain got two yellows and got tossed, and were also without Mitroglou after he went down with an injury.
Japan really should have won this one, but could not generate enough quality passes into the Greek penalty area.
It can be painful watching the Greeks play their defensive game sometimes.

At least you got rid of Hodgson. He means suffering and despair as soon as the nice maneuvering stops working.

Tough match tonight, those Costaricans run twice as fast as us AND are very well organized, not the typical talented but random Latino or African team. I expect some clever tactical move, and specific picks, to shut off the game on the wings.

Maybe you'd like it better if you think about it like a video games, where a goal is worth 1.000.000 points so you have big nice American numbers.

Seriously, try watching the players without the ball and how they move to create space (or take it away). That's where the game is, in spite of marketing showing you individual magic tricks with the ball.

If only it was just the defense that needed an overhaul. The entire team was shocking. Uruguay bought the thunder and all we could do was duck and cover.

Why poor man? His intentions are pure, no, even more: they are righteous. You don't get "manipulated into debating" with anybody. And I find his perspective is often more informed than just "the bible says X which is clearly not okay in 2010 America therefore shame on you for believing in sky wizards".

You can be the atheist-est of atheists but a big part of your own core values and thought processes have been shaped by christianity, as long as you're born in a "christian" country, so it's worth to try and understand the matter somewhat.

Hopefully the Greeks can score an early goal and go into their shell for the remainder, counter-attacking where appropriate.
Its been a strange tourney so far; Spain is out, England is out, Portugal likely won't advance to the Round of 16, Brazil isn't looking unbeatable although they are advancing, Costa Rica is kicking some ass and Italy needs to win today against a tough Uruguain team or they are done.

That's the kind of forwards you need in order win, those who will score on horrible pitch, on a slight goalkeeper error, hitting with the pinky toe while falling down... the elegant, sweet feet forwards are good for exhibitions, and to lose against Italy 0-1 on a break back in the 92nd minute.

Colombia is a rising soccer power with a number of young players who are rising to the rank of elite footballers. The country is a different place than it was back in the days when the cartel was controlling the soccer federation and players and referees alike were being murdered after game-related 'incidents'.
BUT
When the Colombians won the other day against Uruguay, thousands of cocky Colombians were chanting in the streets .." Brazil will fall next !!"
Tell me that isn't a recipe for disaster.
There are reasons why Brazil, the mecca of South American football, hasn't hosted the World Cup since 1950. And the threat of violence is one of them. FIFA doesn't need the black stain that will come with an ugly incident when the whole world is watching.

I can't eat and truly follow the action at the same time.

You could probably tell me something similar about your favorite sport:
1) Goals are rare, not guaranteed. Only caring about it makes watching a game frustrating.
2) The whole team is doing stuff all the time, you can't really see it on TV. But you can try to take in the whole picture, when they aren't filming useless close-by action. Which takes us to
3) individual feats are extremely risky so it's unreasonable to expect a lot of those, unless Maradona is playing, or somebody thinks he's Maradona
In short the entertainment is about the big picture of the game, at least to me. At the same time it's one of the most free-form games so individual magic can always happen.

It's the difference between someone who trains and someone who doesn't watching an MMA fight.
The guy who trains striking, in any form, can appreciate the defensive head movement, the feints, the set-up strikes, the kicks.
The guy who trains grappling can appreciate the small nuances it takes to create a submission, the little movements or subtle changes.
The guy who doesn't train wants the one-punch Superman knockout and screams "FFFFFFFFFFFFFAGGGGGGGGGOOOOOOTTTTTTTTTTTTTSSSSSSSS SSSSSS" when it goes to the ground or goes into Round 2.

Have you ever taken studs to a knee or top of the foot? You will be writhing in pain, I assure you, even if you are Batman. And if you're lucky and you didn't break anything, you'll be good to go in a few minutes, but not before. So all the "fake injuries" aren't really fake. The proper fake injuries are part of clock managing and that's how they take timeouts, or break the other team's flow, and give time to reorganize. Everybody does that because there is no "real clock".

Also, the only way to let your teammates know you're hurt is by staying down; there's little gain in toughing up and keep playing so it's not done.

AAAAAA
8th July 14, 10:58 AM
For the record I think Neymar's injury was a freak accident. The Colombian jumped for the ball, fully knowing he'd crash on Neymar and take him down if he missed it, that's what a defender does. He was very unlucky to hit right on the spine while Neymar was perfectly upright and extending, otherwise it would just have been another of the many bruises they all ended the game with. (Brazilians were hitting like blacksmiths the whole game, too)

Of course that player should have gotten a yellow card, and another for his previous tackle on David Luiz's knee but that doesn't mean he's a "killer" and a "beast" as I've read around. Just a mediocre player.

I can tell you that often the referee isn't even interested in contact or not, but in the fault action e.g. even if X could have kept standing, Y had obstructed him so it's a fault.
Soccer is in theory a non-contact sport, yet it is a very much a contact sport. It's not clear and cut.

I STILL have a hip injury from something that probably would have looked like "no visible contact". It was as much the 'fault' of the pitch and my body movement as it was the crossing player.

Do some soccer players flop? Yeah, but so do NBA players. Have you ever watched a wide receiver start prancing around the ref like a mincing bitch because the cornerback "grabbed his jersey"? How about a batter in MLB start 'chicken-chesting' because the pitcher brought a pitch 'just a little too close' for his liking?

It's pro sports where if you're not cheating, you're not trying.

Around Minute 29 my wife turned to me and said dryly, "I guess that Neymar guy's pretty good."

I just posted this on my FB:

Hoping for a Germany-v-Netherlands World Cup final so the Dutch can switch uniforms at halftime and field a 22-man strong team for Deutschland.

Otherwise, if it's Argentine-v-Germany, the Germans will all switch to ill-fitting Argentina uniforms after they lose.

So it's a final for Argentina after that sad, sad Italy '90. The keeper won this with that first save. Well deserved btw.
They'll win just to spite the Brazilians.

WE R ALL LEBELL NAOW!!3!3

But anyway, who thinks the Brazilians will be swayed to root for the Argies, fresh from the public caning they got from Germany?

Bonus question: Does it feel worse to have gotten a glove on that last shot, or better?

I'd be more in shock for my team performance than angry at Germans, whose final victory would show that they were the strongest anyways. And if it's like European rivalries they'd rather dine on spray foam and manure than see "them" win.

As a counter, Rugby league and union backs often wear soccer boots and rugby boots usually worn by the forwards studs too, but you hardly see the level of amdram in rugby that you do in association football. I would say 13% need and 87% attention whoring in footie.

Edited to add, my legs are covered in scars from my time as a goalie, I also played rugby at a senior level into my 30s.

Absolutely but rugby is a contact sport, different rules and mindset. The team must always advance in full force to have a chance of scoring, more than with football.

This doesn't take from the fact that rugby players are among the hardest asses in all sports, but it's the sport's rules that cause these players -- and culture-- to emerge I believe.

Also less money.

AAAAAA
10th July 14, 08:06 AM
Ronaldo is a fucking drama queen. Like Neymar. But defenders will hack at their ankles for 90 minutes whether they dive or they don't, in non faulty actions or when ref isn't looking. Their way of "getting back" is snatching a free kick in a good zone since their mission doesn't include hard tackles on defenders.

While I believe Germany is the best team between the two, I'm going to pull for Argentina. Germans don't need any more reasons to feel superior to the rest of the world.

Mascherano tore anus in semi-final against Netherlands

http://www.3news.co.nz/Mascherano-tore-anus-in-semi-final-against-Netherlands/tabid/415/articleID/352324/Default.aspx

Argentina midfielder Javier Mascherano's potentially match-saving slide-tackle on Netherlands winger Arjen Robben may have caused him a little more discomfort than he was used to.

Mascherano revealed that he tore his anus in the World Cup semi-final win over the Dutch.
"I thought I had slipped, I thought I wouldn’t make it, but I tore my arse on that move, the pain," Mashcerano said.
