Let's forget about all the politics and media bullshit that precedes the Olympic Games, let's ignore (at least temporarily) the threat of a possible terrorist attack ( although its worth quickly mentioning that the suspected ' engineer ' behind the most recent suicide bombings in Russia was killed in a shootout with police just yesterday)and the supposed state of disarray that the Black Sea resort town of Sochi is in ( unfinished hotels, lack of promised services like television and WiFi, wild dogs running the streets and being exterminated by the dozens in a frenzied attempt to wipe them out before the games begin) as we get closer to the opening ceremonies.Let's place our focus where it belongs.
On the athletes.
The Olympics are a time when the whole world takes note, when national pride is on the line, when unity becomes the rule rather than the exception in nations that are often divided according to political, religious and regional issues or allegiances. Its a time when for fourteen days, we watch in earnest as the world's greatest athletes take center stage competing in many sporting events that for the most part, we don't care about except once every four years. Yes, there are the biggies like hockey, figure skating, downhill skiing and curling, but how often do you hear people chatting about speed skating, bobsleigh, snowboarding or skeleton OTHER than during the Winter Olympics ??
Professional sports are great, but no sporting event captures the world's attention and imagination like the Olympic Games do. It is simply an awesome event.
Especially if you are Canadian.
Yes, Canada, the country that set an all-time Olympic record last time around for most medals won in a single (winter) Olympics and kicked ass on the ice, on the mountaintops and amongst the snow-sprinkled pines.
Yeah, baby.
Let the games begin.

Nice to see the IOCC has taken at least one small step towards weeding out the corruption that often plagues the judges' scorecards and referee's whistles.
http://www.latimes.com/world/la-fg-india-olympics-20140203,0,7694059.story?track=rss#axzz2sYmm2rQg
Be warned, Canadians everywhere will be watching the reffing in all hockey games, both men's and women's very closely as the games progress.
Lord knows that Russia - host of the games and victims of an utterly humiliating 6-1 defeat at the hands of Canada in men's hockey at the 2010 games - would love to take Gold this time out.
We will be watching !!

Only partially true.
The athletes benefit from endorsements and the like, as well as gaining exposure to set them up for a possible pro career - where applicable, of course.
A kid from the USA who brings home Gold in Boxing can expect to have numerous agencies eager to sign him on for big bucks and get his career started.
As he wears his Adidas t-shirt during interviews with a can of Red Bull in hand *cough* marketing *cough*
Weep not for the athletes.

I just put that kind of thing on the back burner and focus on the individual talents and extraordinary athletic abilities we are witness to.
I can appreciate the level of dedication and amount of work it takes to get to this level of competition.
Most athletes are still relatively 'unspoiled' when they are at this stage of their career.
The Olympics are the big show.

I hate armchair athletes , but what i hate worse are overweight, lazy armchair athletes who talk about how great they were at sports when they were in High School.
I have a friend who is like that and its so annoying. He also lies, like I have no memory of who was on the wrestling team with me in HS, or who played on our football team.
I used to call him on it, but now I've decided that I will just let him lie. I actually pity him, he is so insecure he has to lie about HS sports.

Canada gets the Swiss in men's hockey next round.
They are a tough team to play against and they actually beat us in Torino. They play a very boring, defensive game and wait to capitlize on mistakes. Actually, almost all of the weaker teams play that way as its the only chance they have to squeak out a win.
Having said that, Switzerland has come further than any other nation in the past ten years as far as their level of competitiveness. They frequently place in the top five or six and are more of a threat than the Czech Republic is now.

Nolan is an aboriginal and a Jack Adams winner who has generated controversy over the course of his coaching career, mainly due to his failure to kiss upper management's ass and let a superstar goalie tell him who should be on the ice during the PK.
Anyways, nice to see Nolan getting the most out of this group of Olympians that everyone was writing off; they only have one NHL player on their team.
I have no doubt that Canada will beat them tomorrow, but they would do well to play it smart and not take them lightly.

Latvia put the Canadians through the wringer today, scary afternoon for all of us.
I called in late to work so I could stop off and watch the game at least until the boys got a lead. I didn't expect it to take so long.
That Gudlevskis kid in goal for Latvia was incredible. He certainly raised his profile with that 55 save performance. The poor kid was completely exhausted after the game.
Here are his stats as a pro..he is Tampa bay prospect but hasn't played in the NHL yet.
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/teams/players/bio/?id=9791
I think a lot of the credit should go to Ted Nolan as well. He coached very smart today. Latvia's lone goal was a set play devised before the game, and putting the backup in knowing he would be fresh and likely play the game of his life was very savvy as well.
You have to think the USA is now considered the favorite on Friday, just because their offense has been firing on all cylinders and Canada's has not.
John Tavares also went down with an injury today and is out for the remainder of the Olympics.
However, history has shown that Canada usually comes through when it matters most, and in this tournament, there is no such thing as momentum going in to a contest. Each game is its own animal, and Canada will be ready.
It should be a great game.
Considering the USA has lost the last two Olympic gold medal games to Canada, you can be sure they will want to win this game very, very badly.
As for the Russians, this is about as close to a national disaster as it gets for them. Russia is steadily losing its status as the second world power in hockey , being supplanted by the Americans; even the Swedes now present more of a consistent threat in a best-on-best tourney to the other hockey nations.
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/teams/players/bio/?id=9791
Russia hasn't won Olympic Gold in 22 years, although they have won the World Juniors and the World Championships during that span a few times.
Should be a great game on Friday, and don't be surprised if the Finns beat Sweden either - they are pumped.
However, the Swedes have the x-factor in goal with King Henrik.

That could very well be a Husky or similar breed , there are stray dogs all over the place as we all know.
Hard to tell, it looks pretty relaxed in its environs for a wild animal.
Then again, so did the huge half-wolf that walked into my house years ago.
We were sitting there in the middle of June with the front door wide open, watching boxing and this huge cross breed from down the street just walks right in like it owns the place.
It stopped and looked at us, we were all kind of paralyzed, because we weren't sure how it would respond to us.
So it walks into my living room , proceeds to come up to each and every one of us where we were seated, sits down beside us, lets us pet him for a few seconds ( which we did very carefully, I might add). Then it walks towards the kitchen, so my roommate gets up and pulls some ham out of the fridge and offers it a piece.
The animal sniffs it, looks up at him almost in disgust..and leaves.
Turns out it belonged to a guy a few doors down.
Half - wolf, half husky..one of the biggest dogs I've ever seen.

I caught the tying goal and the OT period with the winning goal.
I feel for the US Women's team, only because they were killing a penalty at the time that was...questionable.
Not controversial, because the call was made when one of the American women knocked down Wickenheiser while she was on her way to an almost clear-cut breakaway. You have to call it from an official's perspective.
But if you look closely at the play, the US player actually tripped and only knocked Wickenheiser over because she fell into her, colliding with her hip and causing her to lose her balance.
Knight is claiming she didn't make contact with her at all, which is not true. I saw the play and she did make contact. But it was completely unintentional.
Controversy will dog this win, to be certain.
http://ca.sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-puck-daddy/hilary-knight-ot-gold-medal-game-penalty-bogus-224014555--nhl.html
So its not like she dragged her down or anything, and that's why there was no penalty shot awarded.
All the same, tough loss for the American girls.
To make things worse, the penalty called earlier in the period against the US for slashing was also a bad call. it wasn't worthy of a penalty either.
So yeah, you have to feel for the US women.
This past season, the American women beat Team Canada four times, there were several brawls and the level of intensity heading into the Olympics was immense.
Then Canada won the preliminary round game and the Gold Medal game at the big show.
On the other hand, I'm Canadian and proud as hell of our national women's program. They have won five Olympics in a row now and have raised the profile of women's hockey in this country to heights I never would have imagined.

Post is still unemployed because you did not state what animal it pertained to.

The original dogs (in Snake's post) were (are?) picky. They can afford to be. If the wolves have an abundance of timid prey; that's what they'll go for. Lack of prey + empty bellies = wolves that eat you. That's not picky; that's survival.

This post contains no lap dance.

There is only one way to solve this:

Drop the Biggie-stuffed Dooftard into a pit of hungry wolves. If he emerges, unscathed, he wins. If not, we win.

To make it fair, there must be a nice cross-section of sub-species of wolves.

And all at various stages of starvation?

Well, in order for that to work perfectly, we would need a minimum of three (3) of each subspecies of wolf. One (1) at each stage: just-fed, fed > 1 week, fed < 1 week.

Pie of Hate
21st February 14, 11:33 AM
We would need a wild card wolf that had just been fed that day too. That way, when a wolf that's not hungry eats him, we can add "out of spite" to the equation.

I can see that pissing off a lot of NHL'ers. I wonder what the NHLPA's stance will be?

OZZ
24th February 14, 02:55 PM
The NHLPA's opinion doesn't really matter.
The NHL and the owners are more interested in getting the World Cup or something similar going again because they stand to make a lot of money, whereas with the Olympics , they don't make anything.
Additionally, the owners' have to worry about their players' getting injured during the tournament and how this affects their bottom line.
For instance, John Tavares - he is out for the remainder of the season now and the Islanders coaching staff and management are pissed off. Isles GM Garth Snow was quoted as saying " I wonder if the IOC is going to compensate the season-ticket holders.."
The team will get insurance money to cover the loss to a certain extent, but the ramifications go far beyond a players' salary.

OZZ
24th February 14, 03:33 PM
Its funny, a lot of the younger hockey fans at work are asking me questions like: " Well if they don't send guys from the NHL , who will they send ?" my response is something like " Well, don't you remember what it was like before they started sending the NHL guys ?"
" Errr..no."
I forget that I'm talking to someone who wasn't even born when the Miracle on Ice took place and the Soviet Red Machine was cleaning up on the international stage.
So basically, the kids who are competing in the WJHC will be the ones' who will comprise the bulk of players for our Olympic squads, along with college kids,AHL regulars (who are still considered 'professional' but not elite) maybe a few retired former professionals etc.
And the general public's attitude will go back to " Oh well..it doesn't really count because we aren't sending our very best."
Much like the current attitude towards the World Championships.
If the hold a World Cup in September, the NHL will make big bucks and it will get the fans geared up for the regular season.

Having said that, I can also see a bunch of players who decide to play in the KHL during an Olympic year to avoid the 'No Olympics' clause in their contracts.

These guys LOVE playing for their country. Not just Canadians, but Russians, Americans, Swedes and Finns. If their agent finds a way to give them an 'out', a number will take it.
