My first "real" job the typing pool had a modem that you put the handset of the phone into to use. They also had a fax machine the size of a washing machine and a telegraphist. My favourite thing was the table plotter that used rOtring pens to draw.

I dimly remember acoustic coupler modems in the 80s. I remember watching our cool neighbour who was an RAF engineering officer dialling in to the Prestel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prestel) bulletin board. He was a true geek god who worked on electronic warfare systems by day and wrote games for the Dragon 32 for extra cash and lulz in his spare time whilst still being a decent father.

He also built and ran the most complex model railway I've ever seen and was totally cool with me and his son playing with it unsupervised when we were 7 years old.
