The two professors collected data for belief in hell, heaven and God from the World and European Values Surveys that were conducted between 1981 until 2007 with 143,197 participants based in 67 countries. They compared the data to the mean standardized crime rate in those countries based on homicides, robberies, rapes, kidnappings, assaults, thefts, auto thefts, drug crimes, burglaries and human trafficking.
“[R]ates of belief in heaven and hell had significant, unique, and opposing effects on crime rates,” Shariff and Rhemtulla found in the study. “Belief in hell predicted lower crime rates … whereas belief in heaven predicted higher crime rates.”

sometimes people can put god so high up and far away his providence of morality doesn't seem to fall on mortal affairs, only on affairs of the internal soul.

It's more likely a correlation between being being badly educated/lower socio-economic class and crime, which also correlates with believing in literalist religious interpretations.

Poor old correlation and causation, will people ever realise you're not the same thing?

That too, but I wasn't going to go out and say most Jesus freaks are kind of stupid.

You're also completely missing the fact that the western churches have been pulling themselves inside out with tons of people who don't want to believe in eternal consequences so they only teach and believe in heaven.

That too, but I wasn't going to go out and say most of the black people comprising the religious criminals in the stury are kind of stupid.

You'll note that the article also said "University of Kansas’s Mijke Rhemtulla finds that people who believe in hell are less likely to commit a crime".

I think in a different era you'd be an outspoken blowhard racist, but your options for venting are somewhat constrained today.

So...it's official.

Belief in Valhalla makes you less violent than belief in Heaven.
