Who wears them ?
Anyone on here own a pair ?

I used to wear square-toed motorcycle boots when I was riding and hanging with the old gang. But never cowboy boots.
Now I picked up a pair of real nice quality brown leather cowboy boots for a steal and need to buy some bootleg jeans again.
Maybe I should visit Feryk out in Alberta, he probably wears cowboy boots. We could go out and walk around together lookin' all western.

Cowboys don't wear bootcut. They wear Levis 501, Wrangler Cowboy Fit, or Lee 101z, all of which are straight leg jeans with a slight taper, with the Wranglers being the most popular.

Umm... I live where there are tons of REAL cowboys, IE they have cattle herds for meat and milk production. They wear bootcut.

Those aren't cowboys, those are dudes that own cows. Cowboys dress up in stupid goddamn outfits and go to rodeos.

I have a pair of square-toed cowboy boots. Best of both worlds. Used to have a pair of vintage square-toe monk strap boots. Those fuckers were hot, let me tell you.

square toes were developed to simplify the construction of shoes so that they could be produced more cheaply by unskilled laborers

Also, this statement has been absolutely incorrect for most of human history.

please produce an example of a square toed shoe that predates the modern era

not everyone binds their feet

what's your point? square toes are worse for your feet because the last doesn't anchor the foot inside the footbed properly.

Not in my case. Then again, I have wider than average feet

I'm going to save you time and point out that we aren't talking about the traditional chisel or flat toe, we're talking about the duck fucking billed square toed shoe that reared its head only decades ago.
Even the kind of awesomely weird duck foot shoes from the edwardian period had shape to them.

The only non-square toed, nonathletic, shoe I can wear are Docs. Otherwise, I stick to square toed Kenneth Cole shoes which you hate and detest.
We've had this discussion, before.

I know my feet and stick with what works for me and allows me to soccerpunt low-level gangster types, Goodfellas style.

I am going to the gym now, but we can do two things: you can post a picture of the type of toe you think doesn't exist before the 70's or whenever, or you can take a look at the loose upper in figure 29 (page 267) in this master thesis about shoes recovered from the wreck of La Belle in Matagorda Bay in 1685:

http://nautarch.tamu.edu/pdf-files/Randolph-MA2003.pdf

I know it is a loose upper, but would you consider that a square toe?

I'll be back in about on hour or so.

okay, so the square toe has a long and illustrious history of being a horrible looking shortcut to making shoes. what's your point?

My point? My point is I think these fuckers (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vtg-Monk-Strap-Beatle-Biker-Motorcycle-Boots-Square-9-D-/230779021308?pt=US_Men_s_Shoes&hash=item35bb8067fc)look hot. I also think that, compared to a cowboy boot at least, they are square toed. don't think they are the only shoes that look hot.

Also, the simplest shoe design is and I think generally always has been some variation of the slipper. Call them moccasins or dance shoes or whatever, the are practically ubiquitous and easy to make. I expected a broader historical perspective from you, not that I expect you to care. But I guess that's another one of my points.

not the huge orthopedic shit, the slim one that replaces the bottom layer of the outsole for traction and durability. cheaper to resole as well, and requires less frequent replacement!

Or you could just shell out on a pair of Aldens or Allen Edmonds with a factory fit rubber sole.

I live in a city that is slowly getting less obsessed with cowboys, even though we never really had them in the first place. God bless my muslim mayor.
