Egypt’s National Council for Women (NCW) has appealed to the Islamist-dominated parliament not to approve two controversial laws on the minimum age of marriage and allowing a husband to have sex with his dead wife within six hours of her death according to a report in an Egyptian newspaper.

The appeal came in a message sent by Dr. Mervat al-Talawi, head of the NCW, to the Egyptian People’s Assembly Speaker, Dr. Saad al-Katatni, addressing the woes of Egyptian women, especially after the popular uprising that toppled president Hosni Mubarak in February 2011.

She was referring to two laws: one that would legalize the marriage of girls starting from the age of 14 and the other that permits a husband to have sex with his dead wife within the six hours following her death.

The controversy about a husband having sex with his dead wife came about after a Moroccan cleric spoke about the issue in May 2011.

Zamzami Abdul Bari said that marriage remains valid even after death adding that a woman also too had the same right to engage in sex with her dead husband.

Aside from the obvious unbelievable bat-shit crazyness of the whole thing. Its another example of how transitions from dictatorship to democracy in the Middle East are vulnerable to being hijacked by extremist religious parties.

The article doesn't say what chance it has of passing or how much support it has, but the fact its even being discussed has to make the mind boggle.

And if you were being unkind you might even think that they're going out of their way to give ammunition to the anti-muslim far right.

I assume you'll be writing to them in favour of a 'muddy seconds' clause?

Just how true is this?

Today the far right Casuals United blog (http://casualsunited.wordpress.com/2012/04/26/islamists-add-necrophilia-to-their-list-of-vices-edl-mfe-casualsunited/) is leading with 'Islamists add necrophilia to their list of vices' – echoing a report they obviously read on the Daily Mail website (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2135434/Egypts-plans-farewell-intercourse-law-husbands-sex-DEAD-wives-branded-complete-nonsense.html), who in turn picked it up from Al Arabyira (http://english.alarabiya.net/articles/2012/04/25/210198.html), who had spun their story from part of an opinion piece by Amro Abdul Samea in the Egyptian newspaper Al-Ahram. All the articles claim that the Egyptian parlaiment is about to pass a law allowing men to have sex with their wives up to six hours after death.
Unsurprisingly this 'news' turns out to be almost entirely made up. No such law has been proposed or stands any chance of ending up on the books. Samea was one of deposed dictator Mubarak's biggest fans and probably invented the prospect of the law in an attempt to stir up fear of the democratically elected government that replaced him. On the face of it he's been pretty successful.

Personally, I'd trust a professional Arabic news service over a blog produced on the fly by a bunch of left wing criminals, but hey.

Yeah because an opinion piece by Amro Abdul Samea, a Mubarak supporter, is a much more reliable source.
