This is a sign protestors have at Occupy Wall Street to oppose corporate greed:

NYPD arrested 700 of them on the Brooklyn Bridge Saturday. They escorted the protesters onto the bridge and then roped them off with the orange netting that became popular during the 2004 GOP convention. This does not seem to be happening so much in other cities, but then again, their police departments didn't receive $4.6 million from JP Morgan Chase.

Possibly: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irony

(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irony)Although I don't think that there's sufficient incongruity between the surface meaning and the underlying meaning of the words.

If I understand the meaning of 'pig' on the placard. It means pigs eating at the traugh, Or Trough. However you spell it.

Keith

The protesters mean to confront one type of pig, but are actually confronted by a completely different type of pig. It could be a little bit ironic.

Yes, I was thinking the same thing when I went with "possibly". My reading of the wiki page, though, is that the words actual meaning needs to be virtually the opposite of what they seem to be saying, or what actually happens, so I don't think this slight twist counts as irony.

So if someone is beaten to a bloody pulp by a "give peace a chance" sign then that would definitely be irony in my view. Or in this case if someone had somehow made a large financial gain from the protest, perhaps by getting the signs made in India and selling them to the protesters at a huge mark-up.

The transit workers union is refusing to bus the arrested protesters to local prisons out of solidarity. They're going to court to legally be able to refuse.

Also, Anonymous has announced that they will "erase NYSE from the Internet" on October 10th. Interested to see if that actually happens.

EDIT: Also, a more coherent point of view than you will usually see portrayed on TV. This was a Fox News interview with a protester that never maid it to air: http://www.observer.com/2011/10/exclusive-occupy-wall-street-activist-slams-fox-news-anchor-in-un-aired-interview-video/

Although if they stop trading sites then it would have an actual effect. Of course, aren't there thousands of sites out there that follow the NYSE and allow you to trade on it? Maybe not thousands, but there's a lot of them.

Edit: That interview is funny, and actually ironic! It has both situational and dramatic irony in the FOX reporter saying the protestor has free range to get out his message in an unbiased way, and then FOX completely rejecting the interview for broadcasting. Delicious!

Irony?

Here's some real irony.

Information Technology master Peter Carless, 29, took a 17-year-old female pupil to a Cotswolds hotel as a Valentine's Day treat but was caught out after showing colleagues a love bite on his neck, a hearing was told.

They would have to stop more than web sites- they'd need to go after the FIX connections that convey the transactions. Alternately, they could target Bloomberg. If Bloomberg's systems were compromised or giving unreliable data (well, more unreliable than usual) it would be enough to stop trading. It has happened before, apparently.

Another thing to consider is there are a number of algorithmic trading systems which are programmed to trade on investor panic. IIRC they were partially blamed for that major out of the blue crash that happened last year- a bad price was fed into the market and everything and everyone started selling. Just get enough bad prices into the market and it will go through the floor.

So if they just take down the web site of the NYSE, I'll be very disappointed.

Its true Americans really don't understand irony. But his name indicates that he is without a car, not without a care. And that still doesn't fit the definition of irony. Verbal irony (basically sarcasm) isn't here, dramatic irony rarely fits outside of plays, and situational irony requires an action to be made with a result opposite to the actor's intent. The Carless thing is more a comedic coincidence.

Irony would be if he tried to text the little lady saying their relationship should be kept secret and sent it to the school board instead.
