View Full Version : Best Hockeyfights Thread

Soul Mechanic suggested a while back that I put up a thread posting the best hockeyfights of all time..
I've decided its time to do so. Its Almost September, and I'm going through serious hockey withdrawal.
We'll start off with the King of Kings - the late Bob Probert, taking on St.Louis Blues enforcer Todd Ewen in a old Norris Division tussle.

And here's a tribute video to one of my favorite scrappers - Big Dave Brown. A nasty bastard with a mean left hand.
Brown Played most of his career with the Flyers, but also had stints in Edmonton (where he won his only Stanley Cup) and San Jose.
He works in the Flyers minor league system now.

One of the most celebrated matchups in NHL history when Probert was at the top of his game. Tie Domi was a scrappy guy with a head made of solid wood, he always answered the bell but often took three punches to land one.
Domi caught Probie at the end of a shift in this one ( considered a bit cheap by heavyweight standards).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fER1AOL49Ss&feature=related
They fought a much-publicized rematch at Madison Square Gardens a few months later and Probert exacted his revenge.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pkudhz2YhWA&feature=fvsr

Probert often seemed to get stronger as the fight wore on, much to the chagrin of his opponents.

Here's a sampling from another one of the scarier fighters of recent years - Chris Simon. There was nothing quite like watching this guy toss'em with that long black hair of his flailing around.
He reigned as HW champ for about 2-3 seasons when Probie was starting to decline. A very mean - tempered Ojibwa warrior from Wawa, Ontario, Simon was actually possessed of some very decent hockey skills and had good hands around the net as well as with his gloves off.
Unfortunately, he was involved in some very ugly incidents and will be remembered more for those than anything else.
His short-temper and unpredictability eventually cost him his North American pro career and he now plays over in the KHL where I am sure he gets plenty of space on the ice.

What would a hockeyfight thread be without a couple of clips from the all-time PIM leader (3966 in 962 games) - Dave ' Tiger ' Williams ?

A couple from the all-time Single-Season PIM Leader (472 in 1974-75) - Dave ' The Hammer ' Schultz
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JRUmhl13zI0&feature=related
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_i5krW2h7xs&feature=related
The thing I like about Schultz is that he was one of the few players who threw body punches with effectiveness. The padding was different in those days and he knew where to land them so they would hurt.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_i5krW2h7xs&feature=related
Line brawl between Philly and Toronto from the '70's , Schultz and Tiger square off:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vw9qDXgKXYg&feature=related
By today's standards, Schultz doesn't even rank in the top 5 of all time. But in the '70's he was one of the most feared fighters around. He was also very mean, head-butting, hair-grabbing - he didn't care. All he cared about was doing his job and protecting the star players on his team.
Williams was just downright nuts..a 70's version of Tie Domi who would go anyone, anytime. He has the face to commemorate it. Here he is at an old-timers game:
http://cdn.bleacherreport.net/images_root/slides/photos/000/359/246/tiger-williams_display_image.jpg?1282687413
He made the stick-riding celebration after scoring a goal a classic move.

To finish the day..here's one of the most infamous bench-clearing brawls in hockey history.
Bench brawls are almost unheard of in international play..and you would never see one today. But back in 1987 a chippy game at the World Junior Hockey Championship boiled over and resulted in this crazy free-for all between the two world powers of hockey - Canada and Russia.
8ydbATVriqA
Here's what Don Cherry had to say about it:
Uz9e_8TvTqk

Just for the record - bench brawls are all but extinct in today's game at almost every level. The NHL instituted huge fines for coaches and players alike and did its best to get rid of them in the '80's.
Which is all for the better, in my opinion. A good scrap to send a message or motivate your team is one thing, but bench brawls are just silly. The odd one breaks out in junior hockey nowadays, but not very often...

Ok..I might seem a bit overzealous posting like this. But hey, call me generous - I just love to share.
The following is a collection of all 13 fights between Rob Ray and Tie Domi. I think it can safely be stated that these two guys genuinely disliked one another, at least early on in their careers.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z4FrNYuGqZs&NR=1&feature=fvwp
Notice how in the early fights, Ray's jersey ( indeed, all of his upper equipment in most cases) comes flying off early in the bout. This tactic was used to great effectiveness by quite a few fighters in the 80's and 90's , forcing the league to institute the 'tie-down' rule. In today's game, all players with a penchant for pugilism have to wear tie-downs to keep their jerseys on in the midst of a scrap. A fighter without a jersey on has a significant advantage over his opponent for obvious reasons, and with the players being as big and strong as they are now - better to be safe rather than sorry and keep the odds as even as possible.

As long as people don't mind opening a window..no problem with the links the way they are.

Last one's for the day. This Montreal Canadien was one of the first real ' enforcers ' and a great teammate by all accounts - the late John Ferguson. I used to enjoy watching interviews with him, a really humble, likeable man.
There's not a lot of footage of his tussles out there anymore, but he was one of the most revered NHL fighters of the 1960's who also chipped in with timely goals now and again.

Here's a guy who led the league in fights with 34 back in 1997-98. The first ever European-born Enforcer, Krzysztof Oliwa. This guy seemed to lose a lot more than he won, not a very skilled fighter - but huge and able to take a punch. He actually worked in the coal mines in Poland as a boy..if that doesn't toughen you up, what will?
Oliwa's nickname was ' The Polish Hammer ' and he racked up 1,447 PIM's and 164 fights in just 410 NHL games.

But I still watch them go.

Since we don't want to just glorify fighting..I'll post some great bodychecks too. Starting with one of the best ever , the beginning of the end for ' The Big ' E ' - Eric Lindros, a solid, shoulder to chest hit from Darius Kasparitus:

Keep you head up..no matter how big you are. Be sure to watch it until the end to see all the replays from various angles - its a beautiful check.

Next, we have a bodycheck from probably one of the fiercest D-Men to play the game.
Scott Stevens was known for delivering incredibly devastating open-ice hits on rushing forwards. LIndros was twice his victim, in this particular game, the Flyers were mounting a comeback in a playoff game and Eric had just returned from a long layoff from a previous concussion.
The Flyers ended up losing their captain, the game and the series.
Just for the record, this hit was NOT clean. Notice how Stevens uses his elbow/forearm to make contact with the head. This is no longer tolerated and unfortunately, it took more than just Lindros' many concussions to get the league to make changes. Not until years later when Sidney Crosby suffered a career-threatening hit did the league really start to crack down on head shots.

There was a couple of times they dropped the gloves during a fierce rivalry that featured many bonecrushing hits:

Oh yes, here's one of the most talked-about scraps so far this year. A bout between two middleweights, both of whom have a reputation for being big-time yappers on the ice.
These guys do not like one another and this one finally boiled over, now they can concentrate on playing hockey instead of verbally sparring and taking runs at each other.
I don't particularly like either of them, but I respect them for taking off their helmets and settling this in fine fashion instead of cheap-shotting and mouthing off at one another. Unfortunately, a bit too much holding in this one took away from what could have been a much better fight.

People say its goon tactics to call up guys who can fight from the minors for just one game against a tough opponent. I'm all for it, personally..I'm sure whoever it is getting brought up is happy just to be at the big show, even if it is only to provide some toughness and maybe get into a fight . I seriously doubt it hurts their feelings..plus,they get a nice bonus on their paycheck.
They know what their job is and the other players respect them, that's what's important.

Also, give the Ottawa senators credit for matching Boston physically in that game, even though they lost. As for the NHL right now, there have already been almost 70 fights so far in this shortened season. On pace for a record if it keeps up.
Intensity has been cranked up considerably since every game is so important. With all games being played solely within Conference and addition of key divisional games, jockeying for playoff positioning will be interesting this season.
Don't be surprised if a few teams that wouldn't have qualified for the post-season in a regular 82 game schedule sneak in this year. A 10 game skid could virtually eliminate a team from playoff contention.
I am thinking perhaps the Islanders , with a new sense of purpose and a young squad, may be ready to qualify for the playoffs for the first time in a while.
With all the arena BS and the uncertainty of the franchise's future behind them, the Isles may be destined for better things this year.

Are you referring to the Zac Rinaldo fight that has stirred up so much controversy ?

http://ca.sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-puck-daddy/flyers-zac-rinaldo-kos-b-j-crombeen-keeps-020603222--nhl.html
I agree with the consensus, which is that Rinaldo landed a few bombs while his opponent was on the way down and clearly out of the fight and that it was wrong to do so.
However, hockeyfights are far from an exact science and sometimes, when you get swinging and are all pumped up you may toss a couple of extra punches in the heat of battle.
Rinaldo knows what he did was wrong, and I'm sure it wasn't personal or anything, and I'm sure he also realizes that one of the league's premiere heavyweights may decide to take it upon himself to teach the young buck a lesson about the 'fighter's code'.
So he better be ready.
Having said that, the Flyers , more than almost any team in the league, have a history of enforcers who finish opponents in a nasty manner ( Dave Schultz and Dave Brown both come to mind) and do so with the intention of sending a message to other teams.
Perhaps Rinaldo is simply following in the footsteps of the old Broad Street Bullies mentality.
I was watching that game, and I honestly think that Rinaldo just got a little over excited. I don't think he was being malicious about it.
In any event, as I'm sure you know Feryk, these things always have a way of working themselves out.
Call it ' fighters karma'.

That may have been in retaliation for the cheap shot/elbow delivered to Simmonds earlier.

One organization that has been criticized for being soft over the past decade or so is the Detroit Red Wings.
Part of this is due to owner Mike Illitch's well-known anti-fighting stance. The problem is that keeping a roster without tough guys on it can encourage opponents to take liberties with your star players. The other problem is that you are denying the fans of Detroit an integral, exciting and intense aspect of the game of hockey. Ever since the retirement of Darren McCarty, the Wings have been lacking a true physical presence on the ice (Todd Bertuzzi notwithstanding).
Well, Mike Babcock finally had enough of the softie mentality, decided he needed energy, and got his GM to acquire thunderball Jordin Tootoo last year.

From Rankin Inlet up in Nunavut, Tootoo is the first Inuit to become a bona fide professional athlete. And although he has had his share of struggles with alcohol and inconsistent play, he has overcome these things in recent years and is now a mainstay in the big leagues who is known for landing thunderous body checks and bringing energy and enthusiasm to the team he plays for.
Small at about 5'10, Tootoo is literally a mass of muscle, he weighs in at a solid 210 or so and drops the gloves with men much bigger than him on a regular basis. He is not an enforcer in the truest sense, but a third or fourth liner who will bang and crash, go hard to the net and keep the other teams honest.
I think the Wings were smart to acquire him.

This fight has been getting a lot of press.
KO for big McLaren, but not a stylish victory. The kid he dropped was out of his depth and McLaren knew it.

^^^ Riot !! HA HA !!

Mayhem ..and not a single helmet came off that I could see.
That's the way a Pee Wee brawl should be..lots of gloved punches to helmeted heads so nobody really gets hurt.

Yes..the London Knights have won the OHL championship and made it to the Memorial Cup again.
Our team is awesome..
They are currently out in Saskatoon taking on the Blades for the big prize.
Here's Tie Domi's boy with a nice hit to set the tone.

Max isn't a fighter like his dad, he is a skill player. But that hasn't prevented him from becoming a fan favorite in London.
Go Knights !!!

Give the win to Parros.
They actually fought again in this game, and Parros accidentally fell over and smashed his face on the ice. He was taken off on a stretcher..just precautionary though, he was conscious and responding to the doctor. Big George will be alright.

Canadian National Women's Team VS US National Women's Team. Not often you see this sort of thing in women's hockey.

Milbury may come off like an idiot on TV now, but he was a tough player in his day. You have to have courage to take on Big Bird.
