My car is bricked. I'm a man of limited means, so most cars in my price range - up to about 3.6k - are really only a several year band aid. I've noticed that I can get a decent bike on the used market for less, so I'm intrigued. For the time being I mostly need it to get around town and to the train station, and I need my free time for school, so I think I'm looking at a more recent model that won't need too much care, but I find the classic body styles on Vespas and Lambrettas sexier. Is there a bike out there that meets my specifications?

I'll eschew the obvious. Scooters are pretty reliable and fun to ride :), but you can't take them on the interstate (at least here you can't.) I don't know how big an issue that is, but I'd assumed that the freeways were the main thoroughfares out there. Consider getting a dual sport bike, they're more flexible, fun, fast, and attractive. They're still simple enough that you can do most of the work on them yourself, and they're within your price range.

In CA anything >=150cc is freeway legal (and requires a motorcycle license), which includes some vespas, but you will want to avoid the bottom end of that range for safety.

over here (I don't know what they sell over in the US) they have the Honda super cub, the classic delivery bike, for like 1500-2K$ price range. My neighbor bought his in the early 70's and still takes it to work every morning. That thing is a masterpiece, He took good care of it and it takes care of him.

I know they've sold them in the states before, but I don't know if they currently do or the price, etc.

Look to see if you can find a used large displacement scooter in your price range, such as the Suzuki Bergman line. Freeway speeds wouldn't be an issue with them (particularly once you get to 500cc and higher).

You should get one of these.

I might get a new yamaha vino for 3.5 out the door. 125cc, needs to have some plastic replaced with chrome

Well that thing looks pretty gay. Guess that's a good thing for you. The ones Jubei and I showed you are way fucking cooler then that thing.

But if it makes you feel any better I'm going to inherit a 800cc bike before too long.

the newer vespas have similar bodylines to the vintage ones
that being said, you can pick up a classic 150 for a couple of grand.

MEGA JESUS-SAMA
26th June 11, 09:47 PM
yeah, but i don't have the time to keep a classic vehicle running. The new Vespas are a little out of my price range, but maybe I can aspire to own one.

Do you think a heavy textile jacket is enough for a scooter?

if you can work on a lawnmower you can work on a Vespa

Yeah honestly, speaking from experience, he'll barely have time to make sure the fluids are even topped up on whatever vehicle he is using once he gets a job and full time design school.

Ah, saw some of these driving around this morning. The taiwanese company SYM (http://www.sym.com.tw/eng/) has been making fairly popular bikes around here. They have a pretty good rep. quality-wise and they're a little bit cheaper than some of the Japanese brands. Though, I couldn't tell you in the US now. They have scooter-bikes up to 250cc, I think and the standard 'get around town' 50cc models.

This new look could work for you too with a generous amount of premise editing:

How difficult is it to make that street legal?

jvjim
10th July 11, 10:09 PM
You have to get a title, which is going to be hard because dude selling it doesn't have one. Might be able to use the bill of sale, I don't know if you can in Cali. Also, it's probably not going to pass emissions testing there. Most places all you have to do is license it and put head lights and brake lights on. Going to be a little work on your part, I'd google the particulars of registration before I bought it.

Adouglasmhor
11th July 11, 01:01 AM
Hard getting it through emissions and noisy as fuck with knobbly tires plus a pain fitting lights.(but I am sure it will be fun to ride with a butt plug in so go for it).

No self-respecting male would ever be caught riding one of these things..
I saw the ultimate in biker-wannabe a couple of days a go when I was driving home from work.
This guy was driving a little red scooter on Adelaide street with a black open-face helmet on. He had a sleeveless Harley-T-shirt on , exposing his shitty tattoos..was wearing scuffy jeans and a pair of black biker boots.
He probably goes around to the shopping malls carrying his helmet around , trying to make people think he's some badass biker, then gets on his little scooter and drives home.
I couldn't believe what I was seeing , it was like something straight out of a comedy film.
Scooters are for women and senior citizens. End of story.

you are supposed to wear a suit, skinny tie and a white helmet while wearing these, Ozz

He was probably a hipster.

Shitty tats? Check.
Scooter? Check.
Overinflated sense of irony? Check.

Now all you have to tell us is if he had a moustache or a neckbeard or not. Then we can know for sure.

That or if he was drinking Pabst.

Scooters are great. If you want to spend half your life at the petrol station. Unless you are physically unable to lift your leg over the saddle you should get a real bike.

How so? Scooters are shit and the people who ride them are pansies. They have tiny fuel tanks that sit under seat along with the pathetic midget engines lagging on the back wheel. They sound terrible and are pitifully slow. Plus the shitty plastic fairing make filtering a bitch, like I'm constatly coming up behing fat 500cc scoots which are too fat (Like their owners) to get thru the gaps. Whats to like?

The ones i named do not have plastic fairings, plastic fairing is a moped, even if it's 500cc, it's a fucking moped.

Malaguti closed down last month, Lambretta is now just a fashion bags brand I think. Harley-Davidson instead increased their sales last year. What a shame...
