Well, I'm just going to answer your question right now so I can get to sleep.

My first recommendation would be Uniqlo. They currently have a couple of blue Oxford shirts but the one that you're probably interested in is:
http://shop.uniqlo.com/uk/goods/055037#colorSelect
And look! It's only half of your asking price.

You might also consider GAP
http://www.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=59543&vid=1&pid=774139&scid=774139022
And J. Crew
http://www.jcrew.com/mens_category/shirts/oxfordshirts/PRDOVR~17658/17658.jsp

Both of these used to be middling brands but they've put a lot of effort into their fits and textiles and the results are pretty good. I still think the buttons on J. Crews shirts suck ass though.

Lastly you might consider this shirt if it makes it to the sale which will probably take place in January.
http://uscheckout.apc.fr/browse.cfm/4,828.html
APC's shirting is always 50% off on sale.

Double lastly, you could consider getting a custom shirt made. Some of them are roughly in your price range.

so halloween's coming up and I'm trying to find an old-school military style top in the form of:

or

http://www.wested.com/ekmps/shops/westedcom/images/rocketeer_front.jpg

It doesn't have to be leather or necessarily a jacket... but it needs to have at least one line of buttons from top to bottom and also it needs to look like it was made before the 1930's..

edit: oh, and preferably below $100

Thanks for doing that, shipping on some of them is a deal killer though plus adding duty.

What do you think of this http://www.josephturner.co.uk/JosephTurnerSite/product/Formal+Shirts_Button+Down/BDBO.htm

I like the J Crew but they only sell womenswear in the UK. The Uniglo only had the button down in purple in my size.

Anything with a high design quotient will cost a lot of money. Your best bet is ebay and more eccentric Army/Navy surplus stores.

They look pretty gross. I'd look in to one of the custom shirt makers I recommended, or calling physical Uniqlo locations and inquiring about mail order. Uniqlo does more than two collections a year though (I think they do 4?) so if you can wait a month or two they'll probably have a slew of new shirts.

A wool or leather coat will last until you don't fit into it anymore, so spending 400 - 800 isn't out of line at all if you have as much disposable income as you say. Look at these and let me know which style you like the best.

Hey Douglas, I almost forgot to recommend my favorite shirt brand to you:
http://gitmanvintage.com/oxford.html

Gitman is a bit out of the range you posted (about $150 USD, so 75 EuroFundollars or so) but they are the real deal. The company uses only first-world milled fabrics and makes every single shirt at a factory in Middle America staffed entirely by second, third, even fourth generation shirtmakers. The buttons are mother of pearl. It's actually a pretty sweet deal considering what you normally have to pay for that kind of shit. Give it a thought. I'm not sure how much you'd have to pay to get one into Britain though.

You should also check ebay and other sources for vintage Gitman and Pendleton shirts. Those are the best deal I've found in the vintage market because a lot of people don't know that they're special and let them sell for $5 - $15.

There is a stockist in Newcastle upon Tyne (I am there about 3 times a year) and one in Aberdeen (once a year) according to their website. I will give them a phone and see what they say. Thanks.

Best ever button down I had was a vintage London fog and it was vintage when I got it in 1991.

The customizeable shirts I linked will make them to measure according to your body measurements or the measurements of your favorite shirt. I also noticed that Chuckie Trywhytt is cagey about where the shirts are made and the fabrics milled.

i'm looking for a jacket/blazer to wear with khaki pants or jeans when i need to go somewhere that is not totally casual but not requiring a suit.

i was thinking of a classic blue blazer, but they seem really boring, however most patterned ones wouldn't be generic enough to wear with whatever pants/shirt, and i can't afford to buy a bunch.

my brother says to just get a navy suit and use the jacket when i need it, which seems like a plan.

advice?

OK sorry - I don't mind plastic buttons. Plus if it has MOP buttons I will have to wash it every time, plastic buttons vegan GF will wash it (ie stick it in the machine. hang it up etc.) when she is doing a washing.

I may get another couple if I like them.

Orphaned suit jacket =/= blazer or sport coat, some people will spot it straight away, the buttons and the stitching on the lapels and pockets is usually different, you may be lucky and find one that works for you though.

Navy blazers are boring. Charcoal, tweed, or herringbone are all pretty versatile and not seen much because people associate them with dowdy college professors. But they won't when you wear one because you're going to find one that has an awesome fit and shit.
