View Full Version : World's Greatest Angry Scientist: 'Ya Fulla My J*z Right Now!'

Dr. Tyrone Hayes is a biologist at UC Berkeley and a longtime critic of atrazine, an herbicide produced by the chemical company Syngenta. He took the bold step of sending lots of taunting, rap-quoting emails to the company. Scandal ensued.

According to Nature, Hayes, who "grew up in a tough South Carolina community," has been in a dispute with Syngenta for a decade, with the company trying to cast doubt on Hayes' research which links atrazine to cancer in humans and reproductive mix-ups in frogs. After "a heated encounter with a Syngenta scientist," Hayes kind of lost it. Syngenta filed a complaint with Hayes' university, and included the emails that he sent to various people at the company.

I don't understand. What do they think he did wrong?

what if his awesome reaches critical levels, or his coolness approaches absolute zero; think of the casualties.

If I am ever a professor, I want to be like that guy.

I must absolutely work for this man.

THIS is what peer-review looks like outside of what ultimately gets published.

You have to learn to survive as a scientist, and sometimes that means being a piece of shit - especially when it comes to tangling with for-profit organizations.

Since we are in different fields, I can never work for the guy or with the guy, but I can hope to become that guy. I already have fantasies of cussing everybody out when I give my Nobel Prize speech because the Nobel Prize is a crap shoot and not worth a damn because of it.

It will sound something like this:

P.S. There's no real reason to think that Haye's research is anything but junk, and being reduced to sending sexually threatening e-mails when he's losing an argument is pretty fucking weak.

But let's not let that spoil a heart-warming story of heroic lone black scientist against 'the man'.

maybe you should try reading his research first Cullion.......(if you can)

Rather not thanks.

Whilst the guy maybe a nutjob, have you actually read his work?

Have you read the critiques by the farmas?

Are you now an expert in this field as well?

You cast suspicions on the peer review process of Environmental Health Perspectives, then?

Yes.

You cast suspicions on the peer review process of Environmental Health Perspectives, then?

No, in this case he's already been busted by peer review. That's why he's been reduced to quoting smutty childish hip-hop lyrics when responding to critiques of his work from other scientists.

Dr. Socially Liberal Fiscally Conservative Vermin
24th August 10, 12:10 PM
Yes.

Then please do gives your scientific reading on the matter......

I suspected using frogs to prove atrazine causes hermaphroditism is not a good way to go then.

I don't do science for you, Stirner. You're too much of a troll. Google it yourself.

If there's anything you don't understand and you ask really nicely, I may deign to explain it to you.

Dr. Socially Liberal Fiscally Conservative Vermin

No, in this case he's already been busted by peer review.

Really? A scientist with a vested interest in the product refuting him is hardly peer review.

Hayes's work has apeared in Nature, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America and been backed up by at least one other study in Environmental Health Perspectives. All of which are peer reviewed in the proper sense of the term.

Well at least one of us can actually critically analyse the material.

Cullion
24th August 10, 12:26 PM
Yes, but I'm pretty sure you'll get there if you read enough. Not as quickly as me of course, you're not as bright. But even carthorses eventually cross the finish line.

Perhaps you believe that the EU is impartial when it comes to chemical use on crops? You don't really want to go there do you?

Dr. Socially Liberal Fiscally Conservative Vermin
24th August 10, 12:33 PM
Think your gonna have top help me as the only stuff I am finding is pointing to Hayes actually being right about the harmfull effects of atrazine.

Could you please explain the flaws in Hayes methodology for me. please Mr Cullion, Sir?
