View Full Version : F*cking Sodium, How Does That Work?

ICY

So, as I've mentioned recently several times, I realized, by chance, that my erectile dysfunction was caused by an extreme excess of sodium.

I never understood the effect sodium has on blood pressure. Heart disease wasn't on my radar. I still don't, but I know enough to know it was fucking my junk up. The reason I couldn't get a boner wasn't mental (although the lack of confidence from it just not working physically eventually fucked with my head too), it wasn't permanent damage caused by drug abuse, it wasn't broken blood vessels or damaged arteries...it was just that my blood was as thick as syrup and my heart could barely pump it into my extremities, nevermind something as unnecessary to continued survival as an erection. My arms and legs would fall asleep at times, several times I had weird chest pains and once, I think I may have had a mild heart attack.

So...fuck that shit. I've severely restricted my sodium intake. I try to keep it under 1500mg a day, which is hard to do on my budget. I can't eat pretty much anything that comes in a can/bag/box. There are a few exceptions, but that's the rule. Nothing preserved, nothing pre-made. Desserts are hard to come by unless I prepare them myself, and I've made a point of cutting back my sugar and fat intake as well, trying to get down in weight...which was actually how the whole thing started. I think I may also have been bordering on diabetic, although I never bothered checking cause I thought I was gonna die soon anyway and had a sort of fuck everything attitude.

My worst regret is bacon...no more bacon. It actually makes me want to cry. I love bacon like a family member...only more so.

So...I've changed the way I think about food, and begun to notice how much the people around me still over-consume sodium. I suppose the...4-5 years I spent eating a horrible, horrible diet of McD's, etc. Supersize Me was bullshit...but I did fuck myself up eventually.

Thankfully (although very, very frustrating when I think of all the sex I missed and money I spent on viagra and cialis), I wasn't more than 2 weeks away from recovery at any point. I can get and sustain a boner now, and my...everything feels better, no limbs falling asleep, no chest pain, no bad symptoms. Bowel movements are better, hemorrhoids clearing up (greasy low-fibre shits...bad for your asshole, apparently), complexion is better, happier, cardio-vascular performance increased without exercising much...I just feel better than I have in years and I owe it to changing my diet in ways I didn't understand it needed changing.

So...I was pretty retarded and feel lucky I seem to be returning to decent health. I hope my story of stupidity is inspiring in some small way...cause there's WAY too much sodium in ALL premade food. It's bullshit.

You're an extremely lucky man. You could easily have killed yourself or suffered permanent damage taking roids and doing intense lifting and anaerobic training whilst in that condition.

Treat this like an enormous warning and second chance.

My carotid arteries are distended. I was showing it to my nurse buddy and he was like "AAAH! WHAT ARE YOU DOING, DON'T FUCKING FLEX YOUR NECK LIKE THAT! YOU COULD HAVE A STROKE!".

LOL

I'm not really worried anymore...but yeah...no more McDonald's for me.

Oh, also, during my last cycle, I smoked 1-2 packs a day and did blow on the regular.

How much water do you drink a day?

ICY
31st July 10, 07:07 AM
Then? Um...water? What's that?

Now? 3-6 litres~ depending what I'm doing/eating.

vasopressin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vasopressin)/atrial natriuretic hormone
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atrial_natriuretic_peptide)

there you go, might help you out.

Yuah, I'm sure the blow helped a lot. What shape are your kidneys in?

Aldosterone.

Suppress it with shit.

how many pounds of salt were you eating.

ICY
3rd August 10, 10:17 AM
Goon, steroids are not the solution to everything and I don't WANT to retain water, it just makes me look fatter than I am.

RJ, 5 grams on a good day...like 30 grams on a bad day?

Commodore, I think my kidneys are OK, I did coke or mdma regularly, but not in large amounts.

Yeah, but if your blood pressure was already so high your hilariously nervous friend is worried about you stroking because you flex your neck, and you couldn't vent your blood pressure out to your extremities, I wonder what sort of scarring your kidneys have experienced. But frankly, you seem to be nigh-on indestructible, or the bestsest troll ever, so I wouldn't worry too much.

ICY

Oh, my friend was worried about that 3 cycles ago when I wasn't taking any drugs.

LOL at your friend.

And then LOL at me for being Mr Scary Kidney Disease.

ICY
3rd August 10, 10:36 AM
My friend is a nurse. I stopped doing the neck flex that day and never have since. But yeah...LOL at his accurate predictions that I'd die in my late 30's if I didn't change my diet and drug abuse!

Aldosterone.

Suppress it with shit.

Taking aldosterone will cause you to RETAIN sodium and lose potassium. You will also develop secondary Addison's disease.

Commodore Pipes
3rd August 10, 10:49 AM
I think Goon is suggesting he supress his aldosterone. It was all yoda+street and shit.

ICY
3rd August 10, 07:05 PM
I watch what I'm eating very carefully for the first two meals every day. No meat and very little protein unless I'm sore from working out the night before.

The funny thing is, I will eat any sort of carbs as long as it's low in sodium and fat, but I know I'll burn the calories, so it doesn't really matter if I have something kind of sugary. Same at lunch time, again, unless I'm sore. I workout before dinner unless I worked hard that day (although with my new job that's unlikely) and then I'll eat a proper meal with some meat or whatever protein, although, again I watch the sodium content, no salty sauces (which is pretty much every sauce that exists), no food that comes from a package.

Cullion
3rd August 10, 07:14 PM
You should start making your own sauces.

ICY
3rd August 10, 07:17 PM
Well, yes. Yes I should, and I do add things that are not salty, but just no shitty store bought crap in a bottle.

Cullion
3rd August 10, 07:41 PM
Tomatoes, wine, garlic, herbs, cider vinegar, caraway seeds, Basil, pine nuts.. oh my.

These are all your friends now.

ICY
3rd August 10, 08:05 PM
Yes, except wine, trying to steer clear of alcohol for the most part.

Cullion
3rd August 10, 08:08 PM
You can cook with wine as long as you just use it as a flavour and let the booze cook off. Alcohol evaporates at a much lower temperature than water.

Whilst it's in the pot, it does help tenderise meat and adds a good twist to many other flavours though. Same for ale in a stew.

I'm not suggesting you use it with everything.

SFGOON

That depends on the concentration of ethanol in the solution.

Boiling point elevation occurs proportional to the molarity of the solution, averaged out for the mole fraction of each. Therefore, a 50/50 blend of water and ethanol would have a boiling point of roughly 89 degrees, a boiling point which would continue to rise as the ethanol escaped solution lowering it's mole fraction.

There comes a point of equilibrium where no more water than ethanol is being burned off. Once that occurs, well, ICY is going to relapse. Let's just say that.

a) Where did cracky say he was going tea-total? He's just going to eat better and drink less.

b) If you simmer a sauce for 30 minutes, you're going to end with roughly 40% of the alcohol you started with. For a glass of wine, that's a negligible amount.

SFGOON
4th August 10, 10:35 AM
That depends on the wine. If it was 200% alcohol, that's still 120% which will knock ICY right off the wagon! Hell, that would get anyone drunk!

Cullion
4th August 10, 10:39 AM
200% alcohol, mmm I hadn't thought of that. How about if you just used a lil' bit?, or only on Fridays?

SFGOON
4th August 10, 10:40 AM
Again, that would depend on the total alcohol in the overall solution. 200% alcohol is a lot, I know. But you have to think of these things when keeping cracky sober. 'Cuz it happens.
