So, awhile back I got this knife at a flea market for $20. I thought it was kinda cool, but not much else, the blade was a little dull so I got it sharpened recently and decided to try and figure out where it came from. I'm glad I didn't use it for anything stupid, because it's not in perfect shape and wasn't my favorite knife in my collection.

I knew it was German, cause as you can see in the pics, it says "Solingen Rostfrei" (stainless steel) and thankfully, it has a maker's mark on it, SMF. It's stamped number 344.

So...when I looked it up, it seems to be a German WW2 Paratrooper Gravity Knife (you flick the switch and whip the blade out with centrifugal force, like a stiletto with no spring). It also seems that, even in less-than-perfect condition, it may be worth hundreds of dollars. It's the only time I've ever gotten a deal like this by accident, I feel like I'm on antiques roadshow...only less gay!

When I looked, all the military paraphernalia sites have these for 300 for a rusty broken one, to 600-700~ for ones in the condition mine's in to upward of 1000 for ones in really nice shape...which seems pretty fuckin' ridiculous to me, but fuck, this is awesome...and to think this was my "If shit goes down, I'm cracking someone's skull with this" device...because it's pretty hefty and makes a good fist filler...and the double-ended nastiness and so on...but it's worth more than some of the guns I wanna buy and I'm sure there's some cryto-Nazi douchebag who'll be thrilled to have it...YESSSSSSSSSSSSS.

So here it is, I think I've verified it's authenticity based on the maker's mark :

Those initials are eerily close to JFS.

Take care of yourself, you hear?

I care about you.

I really want to sell it now that I know it's worth money. To me, it's just a neat old knife with an interesting mechanism...but I can get another neat knife, my gun license, and a shotgun for the price this will fetch...so I think I will be selling it.

Very cool find, man. Take your time and find a good buyer. Too bad you're not over here. People love Nazi junk in Japan.

That is an idea, a Japanese buyer might pay quite a bit more for it.
