View Full Version : What has been a false stereotype

Sadly I have dealt with many domestic violence incidents. Through roommates, working doors and a couple of times in a supermarket or a supermarket parking lot. It seems like they always like to play wife beaters as rednecks. But with one exception it has always been the nerdy or artsy types. Its always those dudes who are a bit feminine. Its been a musician, art major, some fag stuff like that. I dont know how to how to explain it other than you take one look at these guys and you know he is the type who you would see and know he refers to himself as an "Artist". If you recall the daughter's friend in the Big Labowski then you know what I mean. Its always been these fuckers who have low masculinity they can shove a woman, but then I go over there and they get all quiet. Was ordering a birthday cake at Savemart once and a guy threatened the deli girl over a piece of ham. Went over and got an inch from his face and all of a sudden he wasnt as mad.

Same thing happens when I have worked event security. Its kinda ironic that all these anti war hippie types in Davis are usually the ones who get violent with their girls.

OK, aside from the hippie look these are the guys who are wearing all black, black long sleeved shirts, with the sleeves rolled up to their elbows and dark rimmed glasses. They wear this even when its 101 outside.

Red necks can often be of a very laissez-faire variety. A doper attitude who thinks he's supposed to be politically conservative. However, that doesn't make a violent control freak.

Violent control freak makes me think of James Carville. Now, that guy is politically progressive and compassionate. I gaurantee he firmly grabs his wife's upper arm when he starts losing it.

I'm not arguing with the stereotype. But on the specific case, do you know who his wife is?

Yes.

But no way in hell do I see her taking it.

She'd take the hand off at the wrist.

Kein Haar

The Carville's aside, a number of female DV victims like to publically pass themselves off as "tough cookies".

I have a cousin-in-law like that. She likes to pretend she wears the pants to save face...but she is actually quite pantless.

When hubby isn't around, it's all: "And then he did that, and I was like oh no you DI-INT. And believe ME, he was in the dog house for WEEK."

Then he comes home: "Where the fuck is the apple sauce?"

"Oh, I'll run out and get some dear!"

The blacks just look for an excuse to not tip at all.

They pay the bill. But..."Y'all didn't leave the tip of the paper straw cover on the straw. How do I know where that straw been at?"

That's the inner monologue to justify it.

Im adopted by a black family and all of them are better tippers than me. Except around Christmas time. Around Christmas I dont know what it is, I tip awesome. Also, I had to google James Carville. He was in Old School. The only legit stereotype I have seen is Asian people. Seriously they cant drive. It was funny though, I was on 80 the other day and there was this van going 45MPH and barely staying in the lane. When I finally was able to pass it I read the side "Korean Transport" I laughed so fucking hard. It was unbelievable.

That scientists are socially awkward loners. That might have been true 200 years ago, when you could do a ground-breaking science experiment in your own basement, but these days you need to communicate and collaborate to get anything done. You have to go to a shit load of conferences and give a shit load of talks, too.

Contrary to popular belief, things don't have to "even out". A smoking hot chick doesn't have to be an idiot and a smart person doesn't have to be a loser.

World o Warcraft stereotype. For the most part is true. Most the guys I know who play WOW are loners, mostly virgins, have very little life. Only other activities they take part of is Magic, D & D...etc. Then the majority of the rest is actually married folks. Wife or husband with kids. My brother plays WOW, has a hot girlfriends, does karate and played football for Fresno state. But the son of a bitch did leave me hanging at Dave and Busters, after I drove 16 hours to hang out with him because he was on a "raid". I got sick of waiting after a few hours and he wasnt answering my calls, came over to find him playing WOW. I choked his ass out for that BS.

Also, this thread has kinda turned into Mythbusters of stereotypes lol

That's a stereotype of Scots as well, so well known that in Germany they will sometimes advertise a sale as "Schotten Preis" possibly with a picture of some bearded monster in a kilt playing the bagpipes.

Brits are awful about tipping in general they just do not have a clue what to do.

One thing I noticed about men who beat fat women is what I called the "evil whiny faggot lisp."

Basically, they all spoke with a croaky, faggoty, beta male, emo biotch, reaking of booze, "I'm too much of a faggot to have hit that lying bitch" tone.

They all had stupid haircuts too, like they had their hair styled by some guy named "Fernando." It all came together in such a way as to say "You wouldn't mace a faggot like me, would you officer?"

Well James, yes I would. And now YOU'RE the one screaming for help while some gorilla bashes your skull into the sidewalk in front of your terrified neighbors and their delinquent little shit kids.

I am often the victim of stereotyping. People hear my voice or see Im from Mississippi and think undereducatedredneckracisttrailerparklivingasshole .
The opposite is true. They call me hillbilly (not sure why since there are ZERO hills where I live in the Delta) too. It doesnt bother me but I thought Id add it.

......Side comment.......

My oldest daughter was playing COD:MW2 online with a group of guys I normally play with. A guy on the other team who we didnt know heard her talk to my friend. She has a very country accent. The next map we were to play was one titled "Trailer Park". Heres how it went..

Her talking to my friend: Hey David, daddy wants to know if you guys are coming over friday

Stranger on XBOX: (in a contrived southern accent) heya leetul gurl tale yur daddee that you sound liyuk a heelbillee

Her: Me? Oh look, the next map is trailer park. You oughtta be good at this one. Since you live in one it should make it easier.

That Womens right activists actually exercise their hard fought rights when they get it.

In Ontario, in the 90's a female construction worker took off her shirt along with the guys cause it was hot out. Got a fine, fought it on rights violation. The white male patriarcal society was brought to its knees and women were given the right to not wear shirts. Women were equal.

How many topless female protesters did you see at the G8 and G20?

Exactly.

I like cops for the most part. I think I have only met a few who were assholes. Most cops however have been really helpful and nice. I do what I can to not waste their time.

The assholes though. I got pulled over in Heyburn Idaho for doing 36 in a 35. There are probably 4 cops total in Heyburn. They pull people over because they are lonely. The officer told me that he knew my kind, knew I was about to speed and pulled me over to let me know he was watching me... Then after his speech he noticed that I had a claymore in a gun rack in the back window of my truck. He asked to see my concealed weapons permit. I told him I didnt have one, also how do you conceal a 6' sword? He let me go with a warning...

As for the second asshole cop. Now, like I said I like cops. I believe they are here to protect and serve(Serve as in help, not meet my every demand) and I feel they get a bum wrap these days. So whenever I saw a cop I would wave. Thought it was nice....I was wrong. I was in Citrus Heights near Sacramento. I had been living in Rupert ID before coming there. I saw a cop drive by going the opposite direction, so I waved. He then did a U-Turn, turned on his lights and pulled me over. A young officer came out and wanted to know why I flagged him down. I told him I just wanted to say hi. Which just pissed him off. He asked if I was being a smartass and thought this was just a big joke. I told him I like cops and was giving a friendly wave. He then proceded to tell me all the dangers of his job and how its punks like me who make it harder. He told me how tough the academy was. He also gave me a "The boy who cried wolf speech".

I feel sorry for cops as well. Like during all these college protests and riots. I watched the video of the UCD one. The reporter is claiming excessive force on the police for using pepper ball guns. The police shot the pepper balls at the ground 5' infront of the students. The reporter claimed that the police had no right to be there because it was a peaceful protests and the students were breaking no laws. I counted 11 laws broken. (They pulled all the fire alarms in the school, ripped up an American flag, destruction of private property, jay walking, destruction of public property...etc.) Then the students decided to try and block off the freeway. But apparently none of this seems to be illegal. Like I said you guys get a bum wrap.

an interesting point that you raise dozer. perhaps domestic abuse is more related to low self esteem or male hierarchy status rather than the traditional view of high testosterone. I think its an interesting idea and wouldn't be surprised if it was true.

I definitely have some hang ups around women from my own past experiences (insecurities, lack of romantic opportunities as a teenager and family thats full of females).

On the flip-side, I think that men are sold a false image of masculinity in modern society anyway. The relevance of muscles and size has become increasingly irrelevant to actual survival value since the ability to wield simple weapons such as stones and sticks and so on.

I am tall, thin and fit into the nerdy character quite stereotypically. I'm often amused by when people try to intimidate me - I have training in grappling and for a large part of last year was carrying a pocket knife for my job. I've overpowered people in training as large as anyone who has confronted me (including powerlifters, police officers etc), although I'm not confronted often (probably not perceived as much of a threat).

What I do think that flies under the radar, is female aggression. Male aggression is obvious and everyone recognizes it, female aggression is subtle - it involves passive aggression, using the environment or the social network in a non-physical way to abuse a target. For example, telling something to a male that will make him want to fight another male for the sake of the female. Or using economic or social threats to a man (I'll leave you, I'll take the kids, I'll find another partner etc). A lot of men might not be able to deal with this particular kind of aggression, especially if they never learnt the ropes in the male dominance hierarchy because they always got shit on from above.

My grandfather was a submissive man who was abused by his wife, it left an impact on my father who has unfortunately passed on a mean streak to myself which I have been trying to do away with and confront more consciously now. There has never been physical abuse in the family but trust me, the negative and petty emotions have taken their toll on everyone involved.

Unlike danno who has come from a hyper masculine family, my family is almost completely filled with females and their associated bullshit. They are vicious. But I would never have to resort to physical violence to deal with them, I've learnt the passive aggressive techniques too well.

For instance, one of my sisters would not clean a mess she made in the kitchen for a week, I asked her several times, waited for a reply (her expecting me to clean it), and then I gathered all of the mess into garbage bags and left it in her bed.

Another who left lots of shit in the trunk of my car, expecting me to carry it in after agreeing she would bring it in. Eventually, I got tired of asking her to take it so I left it on the side of the road for her to find when she came home.

Of course they were furious but I don't get abused because of the way I deal with these issues as they turn up. Just because I am a man doesn't make me a pack mule for their stupid priorities. I have watched them date specific kinds of men for specific times of their life (I need to move apartments - i'll start fucking a guy who has a truck that can hold a lot of shit etc).

At times I have found them quite calculating and shallow, and I can see how some men would lash out at women like that (it doesn't make their position defensible, I can just see the reality of the situation).

At the end of the day, I don't think anyone is better than anyone else. We're all monsters in some way.

Now although I am a gooffball. I am 6'6, have some tattoos, shaved head. Im a decently scary fellow when I want to be. Which is why I do my best to keep calm. When I have yelled at somebody they called the cops. A person at my lending company had messed up my student loans. They put that I was making payments, not putting a down payment of $500. So a few months went by, then I got no rent/living check and was getting calls from a collection company.I had my receipt from when I paid and she didnt want to admit she made a mistake. I lost my temper and yelled "ARE YOU FUCKING RETARDED!?!" So after that I make sure never to yell. Also, it bugs me when people try to intimidate me. I dont know what to do. Cause normally its a little guy. I just get confused.

About the domestic violence though. How youre brought up does play apart(Not passing the buck in anyway) It also does have to do with your masculinity. The one I have stopped have always been those guys who are fruity and probably the only way to make them feel like a man is to dominate a woman because they arent dominate anywhere else in their life. Every single time I confront these guys they back down.

Another thing, the times when this has happened in a store or a parking lot, WTF is wrong with people these days? Its bad enough some asshole is threatening or abusing his girl in public. But all these people who will just watch or pull out your camera phone. If I see a camera or a phone ever filming me when I break one of these up, I'm breaking it.

He didn't understand that cars heat up during the day because of the, how you say, "green house effect".

I tried explaining to him that it was 11pm, 75 degrees, the windows and sunroof were open, and the only reason he was talking to me cuz I was on one of my routine checks of dog in question.

He didn't understand the "green house" phenomenon, so I gave up and showed him my badge.

The words are starting to be used the wrong way round. Some people say this is an example of language developing I say it is an example of thick fuckers talking shit as usual. I have been accused of thinking language is static for this.

But see, an actual canoe would be so much cooler than a kayak - or at least manlier to carry around. And why didn't a single one of them have an oar? What good is a kayak/canoe without some locomotive device?

The fact that he even mentioned the academy tells me he is a recent graduate thereof, and likely has his ass on his shoulders.

Someday soon, someone will knock that young man off his apple cart.

that might be the case also.

There's plenty of redneck domestic violence. Don't think because it isn't limited to the stereotype, the stereotype is never true.

It has almost NOTHING to do with "Masculinity"

at all

if that were true there would be no abusive wives and no abusive lesbians and no abusive gays (because there's no woman to dominate)

You also need to evaluate YOUR issues - "I totally showed that bully not to be a bully by bullying him" does not evaluate. "I made HIM feel like he thinks WOMEN should feel. I sure showed that faggy little artsy guy"

You got a few things of your own going on there.

You think there's any chance you maybe have a bias toward seeing aggression where you can deal with it? And not seeing it in people more like yourself?

You could deal with one incident a week for life and it would still be a small sample.

Where I personally have seen the most domestic violence is actually in the upper middle/professional class, but I don't think it's confined there.

Faces, as in painful grimaces... as in when you turn around to look at me when I'm giving you a colon zamboni.

When they took me in the one time I got arrested the officer who was waiting to do the pat-down search left and three kind of fruity officers came in. Were they trying to give the office gays a bonus by letting them feel me up?

Rednecks beat their women in public. That way everyone can see they are in control of something.
Middle class guys do it in private. Their wives keep quiet for the kids sake and out of shame.

What's the evil twin of appeal to authority?

Just because an expert says it's true, doesn't mean that it is true. I get that.

But, just because an epigenetic suicide says something is true, that doesn't mean it's false.

Wait...what?

I found a wallet while trimming trees, no cash but credit cards and lots of ID from florida and elsewhere...and took it into the Police, because I thought they could find the person, who might have been mugged ect...

Panic, supervisors were called, statements and paper work, and my ID and my wifes ID and more questions. If was as if we were confessing - not sure we didn't either??

Not doing that again. Paper envelopes sealed with dog saliva from now on, dropped in a post office with 1cent stamp, with Police as return and forwarding address.

They should have been more gentle with you. I would never make a "good samaritian" feel like a suspect, but I would sure as fuck ensure I got their story in writing and ID'd them in case interesting things came up later.

Nicely as graciously as possible, of course.

Cops see different things than you, and as such are apt to see things differently than you.

It depends. A lot of shit cops do because they HAVE to do it - they have no choice in the matter. For example, even though state law gives cops here leeway, at my former department you HAD to make a custodial arrest for drunk driving.

Other times, cops are given the latitude to make their own judgement calls.

Let me ask you this. Your assumption is the wallet was stolen, yes?

Well, what if the owner had been murdered and the wallet stashed to hide evidence? It may behoove the police to come ask you for further details if that were the case.

This is the kind of shit that actually happens, hence the covering of asses and the need to be thorough.

They should have been nicer, though. Shouldn't have made you leave all pissed off. That's not good.

I usually have little emotions. I dont really talk politics, I do have my soap box issues, but normally I walk away from that stuff. Although I am a physical guy, I dont get into fights. I dont think I have ever been in a real fight. (I dont count high school fights, those were lame as hell) I think the only time I ever really hit a guy as hard as I could with intent to harm was a raver who bit me a few years ago. Women, Children and Dogs are my soft spot. Everyone has one. I dont deny that. It hits home personally for me.(No I was never abused and my dad didnt hit my mom) If I see a bunch of guys jump one dude I would help out. I would try and break up any fight(Not just because its my job)

Also Cache, could you elaborate a bit? Yes I have my aggressions we all do. But I get them out on the mat, in the weight room, by running, watch a funny movie, go dancing and I even do some writing. Now I get that youre saying we are the same because we both have aggressions yes, but I get mine out in a mature and constructive manner. Not an immature and destructive one. Also, this isnt some sort of thing about me at all. I was raised to never raise a hand to a woman. I find it disgusting and wrong. Hell there are literally hundreds of Bullies(Referring to Bullshido members)Where they have stopped people from doing bad things using the skills they have.

If I misunderstood your post, I do apologize. If so, please elaborate.

The final episodes of the Sopranos involved Dr. Melfi coming to accept that Tony was an untreatable psychopath.

It featured her reading a journal in which it mentioned the psychopath's typical blasphemous scam of appealing to the sanctity of vulnerable subjects like babies, animals and women.

You almost repeated it verbatim.

Here is what i never understood: I was that type, i played RPGs with my friends(home made versions of DnD) and video games.

But i realized, i pick or created charecters that knew martial arts, were in shape. Were very active and aggressive.

SO i figured, why the hell am i PRETENDING to be something i want to be? WHy not become the real life version of these charecters? Why pretend to be strong when i can actually work and make myself strong?
