I'm excited about the monk-strap sneakers, which is something I've been wanting to happen for a while. I don't feel that this example was particularly well implemented but I can't wait to see what other designers do with this trend when it finally lands stateside.

The stylings are busier and weighted down with branding, but most importantly they still haven't escaped the mistakes made by corporate label kicks in the 90s and 00s. Silhouettes suck too.

Mainly the finish round the welt, along with the creasing beside the lace holes over the tongue and below the detail panel, that's where they will crease with wear. They are not the most expensive shoes but for the money I would expect better. You can get H by Hudson or even Design Loake for similar money, or there are other fashion first or heritage brands in the price bracket depending on what you want. I would say for the money you could get better shoes.

But of course if you feel you have to suffer for beauty go right ahead,I'm not your mother.

If I picked you up wrong and you were asking about the bike ones, I saw them a year ago and liked them, I like wearing them with my kilt when it's shitty weather -ie normal for Scotland.

Actually TGM is one of the best deals in designer shoes I'm aware of. Compared to the brands you mentioned, which variously use third-world labor and textile linings, TGM features first-world labor, leather linings, leather insoles, and traditional corking, even in their sneakers. I really don't think you know what you're talking about.

Loake use 3rd world labour and textile lining?

I admit I don't know the work practice of Hudsons but never seen anything but leather lining on their stuff either.

Plus Portugal where TGM build shoes (I did think about using cobble instead of build but it looks weird, maybe make?) makes even the UK look like a 3rd world country in some respects. They are pretty hot on rights and have progressive policies on many issues.

MEGA JESUS-SAMA
15th June 10, 01:07 AM
H by Hudsons and some of Loake's casual shoes are the guilty parties. TGM don't front yo, even their sneakers feature traditional dress shoe construction with leather lining, insoles, and hard corking, except for the (hand-stitched!) sneaker-style outsoles. I suspect H by Hudson uses cheaper hides than TGM as well, and the only information I can find about their country of origin is "imported", which is always a euphemism for "Pakistan"; when they're imported from Japan, Italy, or whatever, they let you know. Loake is so unforwardly classic but that's not bad at all.

I'm kind of surprised that Portugal is so progressive. Given that they're sort of an even more downscale alternative to designer kicks than Common Projects I assumed they used Portugal partly as a cost-saving maneuver.

have you tried allen edmonds? for a fraction of the price... their shoes look really nice and, from what i understand, are comfortable as hell. if you pay attention to the detail in the shoe, you'll see that, like alden shoes, they use very good leather and the upper is handstiched piece by piece. allen edmonds have a pretty flexible sole, and the lining and shank are made with cork... so there's no break in period for the shoe. this is particularly comfortable if you're flat footed.

both companies offer ridiculously good shoe repair service.

i hadn't, but will definitely look into some when my next purchase is coming up.

people on here looking for good shoe deals should check http://www.theshoemart.com

once you get your size figured out, you can buy shoes online and be ok, and the shoe mart has an unadvertised feature where you can call them and asked to be put on their factory seconds mailing list for your size. then you get emails with what they have in stock (at a good discount.) personally i shamelessly went to the alden store in nyc to get sized before buying my shoes from the shoe mart.

oh, word to the wise, even expensive shoes don't come with shoe trees, so add a pair to your order. they did throw in a nice shoe horn though.

there is no shame in doing this, because higher end shoe companies stand by their product and what really matters to them is that you're wearing their brand, not where you got them.

i love stuart weitzman shoes and i go to his store on rodeo dr. to buy them. last summer, i went to saks fifth's online store and bought some cork platform wedges on sale. when they arrived at my home, the size ran a little big. so i went to the shop on rodeo, told them my story, and they exchanged them for me. no questions asked.

Board breaker...

I've been digging Mossimo shoes lately. You can find them at Target. Their logo is small and is a simple heraldic lion. They have some really good stylings in their stuff (along with some horrid stuff). They are genuine leather as well. The best part? Usually only $20-30. The even better than best part? They are actually stitched through and through. The soles are stitched to the main body of the shoe, the uppers and everythings is usually double and triple stitched. You won't find much of that dumb glue stuff. They do skimp on the sole rubber/plastic material a bit though. Tends to wear the tred down too quickly for my liking. So I just save them for regular city sidewalk walking and do heavy athletics or work with something else. At their price I buy several pairs and switch them out. Keeps them fresh looking even longer. These shoes are immensely comfortable and usually come with good arch support.

I was surprised at first because the only contact I had with Mossimo brand stuff was growing up and playing soccer. They are a pretty big and well-known maker of soccer clothes and equipment. Their soccer cleats are usually sublimely made.

EDIT:::
Found sum PICS.

I just bought a few of these two styles recently:

Gayer than MJS, IMO.

Oh, and MJS, another option you may look into is actually designing your own, buying the leather you want, having it treated as you like, and then getting a shoe maker to make it...because that can't be more expensive than the shit you're posting and would be much more awesome.

Actually, mom's sewing machine can do light leather. I was thinking about getting my hands on a last and trying to make an upper at some point, but I'd probably have to take it to a cobbler for soling.

Actually I think it almost mimics a monk style (for the cost of it) but without the hundreds of dollars. Plus, I don't don't shit a brick if I ever step in a pile of shit (or dead baby), I can always buy another pair of shoes since I didn't spend my months pay on it.

stepping in something isn't a big deal just because your shoes are expensive. It still washes off; in fact leather is a lot easier to clean than textile.

Would you like the general populace to dress in shoes they can't afford or shoes that look better than Vans? Vans look like shit, in fact they look like a door stop more than they look like shoes.

actually it *can* and *is* more expensive to have your shoes custom made.

let's forget about places that will have you trace your foot and take measurements to see which pre-existing last they could use for you (a last is a wood foot shaped object used to make shoes) and talk about true custom shoe making.

a real shoe maker will create a last for you with your first pair of shoes, which will drive the cost of those shoes up to around $1200 or more. after a last has been created, then you can have new pairs made on that last for around $800 or more depending on if you want shell cordovan or whatnot.

i don't wear dress shoes often enough for that to be worth it, but if i *did*, i would.

They aren't gouging you on materials, and anyway they're still a highly skilled, and now extremely rare, labor that costs quite a bit of buy.

ICY
28th July 10, 10:03 AM
I'm gonna go price this out, and yes, every skilled labourer who supplies materials gouges. Period. It's like thinking a mechanic isn't gonna gouge you on parts. Bullshit.

Anyway, I suppose it must depend on the cut of the boot and the volume of sales at a given shop. I don't think it would be the same here (cowboy town, shit-town of boots being repaired constantly) as there (fags buying new shit all the time, not as many repairs, etc). Also, the overhead here would be way lower.

There are players from many many different countries that play in the MLB. Well like Synchronized Swimming, there are teams from around the world who play Baseball everyday with the hopes of being the best in the world at it. More then I can say for caveman stick wackum.

That's why MLB is televised around the world. I dare say some of your close friends and colleagues just may tune in from time to time. . . If not for baseball then the NFL,NBA or NHL maybe? Last I heard the NFL was still playing one game a year across the pond to sold out crowds. Those tickets are pretty pricey for a bunch of pretentious twits who don't give a shit.

As for baseball, there a millions of Japanese, Koreans, Chinese, Dominicans, Cubans Puerto Ricans ect ect that would tend to differ with your very brash opinion of American sporting events. But do carry on watching grown men dressed in their little sisters shorts run around wacking a ball around with a stick of Irish Ash. Who am I to judge? It looks fun.

I am actually a bit repentant now, just a little bit, I can see you are quite passionate about baseball and I know next to nothing about it (and ver little about cricket too come to that).

Anyway our other stickball game. (it's golf). I used to play hockey as well as shinty, both field and Ice (Glasgow Dynamos).

Usually people don't even know the rules for baseball here. I learned it at school: our PE teacher was considered some kind of weirdo for teaching us to play baseball. It lasted one month, before going back to basket, football etc.

NBA is a different beast, that's the highest level basketball played anywhere and it does have a good following. Not the same can be said for NFL (rugby with helmets and forward passes, WTF?) and NHL (brawls as part of the game, WTF?, even though in hockey countries it's loved of course).

Actually I did just make fun of the "world series" being an US domestic thing, which is a little overboard you'll admit. The whole brash opinion is:
What kind of athlete do you need to be to pitch a fast ball? A good pitcher? To play any other sport, you must be strong, fast, have endurance, and in general have athletic skills. What's up with those fat batters?
I like a sport where complexity arises from simple rules, and with simple implements. Football is like that; baseball is the opposite. And too many pauses for drinks food and commercials.

disclaimer: Same goes for cricket. Just because one thousand billion Indians love it, doesn't mean they're right.

Just picked up a new pair of these. Simple, clean and classic. Goes good with most of my clothes and makes my size 13's look not so much like clown feet.

LuLwut? Get over yourself junior. I was under the impression this thread was about posting pictures of your new kicks. Why in Gods good name would you think this had anything to do with you lil miss fruity feet? I picked these up yesterday. These are the Nike Zoom P.Rod 2.5's. Very comfortable, light and came right out the box feeling like I had already worn them for a couple weeks and broke them in. The only thing I don't like about the whole white soul thing going on with most skate shoes now days is they are a pain in the ass due to getting scuff marks so easily.

I just ordered a pair of these badboyz this afternoon. Doc Marten's Robson Tevin slip ons.

I normaly wear Sketchers Scholars "Ivy" work shoes but figuring I work at a pretty upscale bar and the Doc's looked pretty nice for work shoes and are very comfortable I figured I should give them a go.

These are the Sketchers. I would never wear a pair of Sketchers street shoes, or any other model they carry for that matter tbh.

This is why I don't get fashion. I understand they're probably made better, but these shoes look pretty much the same to me as the shoes I got from Keuka for about $23 (discount through employer). Soles different, and a few of the lines, but meh.

The sketchers look to be made out of a higher grade leather then those. Well tbh your shoes look like cheap pleather to me. The soles of them also look kinda crappy. I like how the sketchers and the docs have a chunky very high quality slip resistant sole. Do you polish your Keuka's? For me personally I need my work shoes to be leather and polishable. When I got this bartending job I bought a pair of Florsheim slip on work shoes that are very nice soft leather and very comfortable. Only problem is I have somehow worn the tread out on them in a 7 week period. 125.00 dollar shoes that lasted less then 2 months. That is some bullshit. With the sketchers I know for a fact that they will last me at least 4 months. I figure the Doc's will last at least 6 months.

Inside tag says leather upper, but tbh I'd prefer pleather. No I don't polish my shoes, but they have lasted over two years of being under me whilst I run around serving tables.
