Man I wanted to be further into Dragon Age before I started reviewing it

but I'm having trouble getting further into it.

It really feels like an also-ran after just about 4-5 hours of play.

I'm playing the xbox edition and despite being an advocate in general of console play, I gotta say this feels really wedged onto the console.

I'm also someone who started gaming with pong, and I gotta say, some of the graphics here are a little sub-par for the sub-genre. It's an rpg, shit that doesn't have to move fast should look perfect. The player and party models in particular don't look so good. The world, enemies, and music look great, though, and you don't look your own model in the eye all that much.

Gameplay-wise, I'm really feeling what they TRIED to do - the options for customizing your parties AI are deeper than we're used to seeing. So far for me, though, it's translated into "Since there's no cover system and we're trying to implement all this in real time and since your party goes into Action Mode whenever you get near an enemy, you're just going to end up rushing them."

It's strange - there are neat things in the game for fighters, mages, and thieves but they don't end up meshing very well in real time. On a pc, I would probably take the game out of real time or just pause more, but the radial menus and hotkeys are pretty clunky so it's hard to have fun playing the ranged general I feel my mage should be. As a hideous piece of artillery, a living shotgun? Yeah, I am having that fun. It's just kind of kayfabe-breaking fun, like running horde eldar in 3rd edition 40k.

I gather in the PC version, friendly fire is turned ON by default and that makes the battles into less of a scrum, and maybe with some level progression and a little more feel for the game, I'll flip that switch.

The inventory system is a little clunky and in particular I can't seem to figure out a way of seeing if a new piece of gear should replace the one my character has on - the "comparison" feature is very clunky.

I wish the skip dialogue button was mapped right to the initiate dialogue button instead of in the japanese position. Odd for a game developed in NA!

I was expecting this game to be an outing that patched the flaws in Mass Effect, instead of highlighting them, and I have to say fair or not that perception is limiting my fun.

Sadly, you can't play a bioware game without comparing it to its big brothers - KOTOR and Mass Effect - and its little sister, Jade Empire. Playing Dragon Age is frustrating for me, because while there's nothing in particular WRONG with the product in front of me, I keep thinking I could be playing one of its siblings again and having slightly more fun.

I am a little sad I started playing dragon age 3 days before Mass Effect 2 hits shelves because I know I'm going to buy ME2 on payday and probably not touch dragon age until summer. It's not fair to blame the game for the industry trends of big Novembers and big Februarys, though.

Personally, i also think I need to join blockbuster exchange or gamefly or something since I seem to have a bad habit of buying games early, then not actually digging into them until they are damn near greatest hits or I want to play them before their sequals drop.

Storywise, so far we have a fairly interesting world of persecuted mages, religious conflicts, interesting new spins on the elf, dwarf, and druid tropes, a cool cosmology - the world feels interesting enough that I do want to know more. I have a personal preference for games where you are written into the story (like Sheppard in ME) a little more vs the generic feel you get with a more custom character like this. Some people feel the opposite, feeling more connected to a character they get to personalize, and they might find this a feature not a bug.

Complaints aside, DA is a pretty good RPG with most of bioware's expected craft. I'm a certain that a PC purchase would be pleasing for those with an appropriate system and a console purchase isn't going to piss you off or anything. But it's not the "Mass Effect 1.5 in Fantasyland" I was hoping for. I give it about an 8.

consoles suck.

Dragon Age for PC is the TITS!

plus you can mod the shit out of it, like I've done for my copy, including better party AI, nudity mods, more realistic faces, HD textures and free DLC crap

*a slight warning about the nudity mods, in the Return to Ostagar DLC, I was unpleasantly surprised to find king cailan crucified with a raging boner... unsettling, to say the least

I was told the mods allowed you to get a LOT closer to building a character of your choosing (in my case, an expansionist who beats the shit out of opponents and sells off parcels of land).

Lied to byadvertising.

Oh me oh my.

Now you know how PC players feel with 80% of the games that come out because of you console-playing jerk-asses. Assassin's Creed, Bioshock, Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, Fallout 3, the list goes on and on. Suck it.

It's not my fault the people who sell PCs refuse to compete with the people that sell consoles in terms of money or periphs.

You definitely need to micro-manage your squad, that tactical element is one of the most fun parts of the game. If its so hard to do on a console, you're really not getting the experience of it.

I'm gonna give it a little more time. I think I'm going to start "maining" (ugh gamer slang) the Big Tanky Guy instead of my mage

after 2 playthroughs, what they're saying online is definitely true: 2 mages = easy mode, 3 mages (w/ arcane warrior) = CAKE on nightmare

Having just finished ME2, I'm starting to play this in earnest. I'm thinking of going with the arcane warrior specialization for my mage, since it's closest to the battlemage I used to play in Oblivion. I'm just getting Shale now, but I hear she kind of suxx0rz and that Sten might make a better tank.

Thoughts?

tank = alistair, hands down

like I said above, alistair + arcane warrior + two mages is almost like cheating

How to win at life and Dragon Age: cone of ice, stone fist, stone fist, stone fist; repeat until victory.

In a boss fight, the above, plus have Allistair tank the boss.

EvilSteve

Hmm... I've been concentrating on fire spells. Maybe should look into the ice / earth spells.

jvjim

Fireball is the shit, there's just too much friendly fire for it to be spammed though.

OH! And the storms are cool as shit too. Earthquake, Lightning Storm, Firestorm, Blizzard, Earthquake, Fireball, Fireball, Fireball!

crowd control is your friend. that's why mages are so bad ass

EvilSteve
19th February 10, 04:02 PM
Yeah- I noticed mages are actually powerful in this game. A refreshing change.

Man, if they could set up some Guild Wars-style multiplayer with an expansion, this game would be tits to the second power.

EDIT: And I would WTFPWN all you assholes.

Nice try. You want a tank, build your own. Dwarven Champion with 450 health FTW!

it'd be hard to do because of the game mechanic. i.e. pausing (which is what I love to do)

jvjim
19th February 10, 05:08 PM
yeah, to make it work you'd have to get rid of pause and program you're doods for like 15 different situations

I actually did that for the PC. There's a plethora of mods out there, some of the ones I ended up using (not exact names, sorry):

- 20-some tactics slots for all your characters
- permanently hide your helmet (wish they had this for mass effect 2!)
- more realistic skins for major and minor characters. this mod really made people's faces look more lifelike than the stock character models & textures
- nude skins of course*! (tee hee)

you can find all of these at http://www.dragonagenexus.com/

* I may have said this before but a little word of warning here, the skin pack I got also gave all naked male characters raging boners. This is QUITE disconcerting if you do the DLC where you find King Cailan's naked body crucified in Ostagar. I guess rigor mortis had definitely set in

How long is gameplay?

EvilSteve
26th February 10, 09:15 AM
I've been playing for about ... 10-14 hours so far and I'm about 1/3 of the way through I think, not counting side quests.

How long is gameplay?

My first playthrough took about 2 weeks, playing a few hours a day.

Second playthrough took a week, again a few hours a day/every other day.

Both times I completed all the quests I could find.

Don't forget to pick up the DLCs. Some of them can add 2-8 hours of playtime a piece.

Feryk

Some of the walkthroughs say 60-75 hrs.

I'm at 58 hrs, and I'm just starting the final assault.

EvilSteve

...and you can do a full on lesbian three way if you work it right.

You have to play a female warden. Then, you have to get into a relationship with Leilana. Make sure you do her personal quest to harden her disposition. Then, go to the pearl and take Isabella to bed in order to get the duelist specialization. She will ask you to bring Leilana along. And, if Zevran is in your party, he'll be invited too, making it a four-way.

This unlocks the achievement 30G- Where the Boys Aren't *

It's also possible to work a three way between Isabella, Alistair and a female warden from what I hear.

* No, it really doesn't. It does give you the Wine, Woman and Song achievement, I believe.

the only other caveat is that you CAN'T talk to isabella before this.

and it just fades to black, no cut scene like the relationship sexy times :(

Why do you need porn in your video games? I guess I can come up with and understand some semblance of reasoning but it all just seems so.... much?

Same reason that there is nudity in R rated movies.

well... so far I haven't *needed* any armor. My arcane warrior girl has been soloing the expansion on nightmare in the buff

Using Spellweaver, I see. Did you do the dual blood mage / arcane warrior specialization?
