View Full Version : Chainmail Belts

The first thing I ever made out of chainmail was a belt. It was, in fact, the desire for a chainmail belt with an outlandish buckle that prompted me to learn how to make chainmail.
I've since made four. Two of them I made long ago and wear on a day to day basis, the other two I made recently with the intent to sell.
I just took a bunch of photos for my art gallery, and decided I should probably post them here.

The first I ever made. I got the buckle of eBay, many moons ago. I'm still in awe of whoever came up with the "skull wearing a sallet with crossed cutlasses" design.

Another belt using the same design, except with a lion that looks like a fireball. Buckle also courtesy of eBay. The above two are the belts that I've been wearing on a day to day basis for the past two years or so.

As you can see, this has a substantially less lavish buckle, which I dug up at a thrift store. I made this one with the intent of selling it instead of wearing it.

This one is using larger rings and a heavy gauge wire. The buckle also came from the same thrift store.

All of these were made using the same weave (European 4 in 1), and all except the last were made using 5/16" 16 gauge rings. The last was made in 3/8" 14 gauge rings.
Anyways, enjoy. I'm currently working on another belt in the same pattern, but using brass wire.

Just out of curiosity, How much would it cost to make a couple of those that could be securely attached to a wall, so that I could strap somebody in and lock them up?

That depends on how long you want them to be. Somewhere around $10-15 per foot.

How well do they hold? Do you feel they tend to pull down on your waist, like overloading your pockets with change?

It really depends on how tightly you wear them; if you wear them loose, they'll drag your pants down a little bit. If you were them tight, then they'll hold your pants up the same as any conventional belt. It's not much of an issue for me, since I tend to wear tight jeans.

This shit is pretty metal. I can see potential for this. Tight jeans, megadeth shirt, surplus airforce boots, this kickass belt.... Thanks for the new reason to loss about 20-30 pounds, may be sending you a buckle and some dollars to rig one of these up for me if you're willing.

I thought you had in the past advocated jeans being as form fitting as possible, and thus your objection to relaxed and boot cuts.
Chainmail cardigan would be a lot, especially if you wanted it to have sleeves. Like, $300-400+.

Yes, they'd just be incredibly uncomfortable.

do you only do chains, or could you punch out some bitchin' rivets and buttons for jeans too?

Tired of me pushing this onto each thread that gets posted in? Well fuck you! Ham Chips (patent pending)!!

They're as annoying as whole parody threads, but less filling!

I've done some stuff with studs and spikes; mostly on leather jackets, though I've played around on a pair of jeans. It's something I want to get more into.

Holy fuck, great idea time: metal jeans, the most brutal pants in existence. I'll call up Brendan Small for a tv tie-in.

I just finished this one for jvjim:

http://th09.deviantart.net/fs47/300W/i/2009/228/0/c/Baphomet_Belt_by_MetalArtisan.jpg

If it's unclear, that's Baphomet on the buckle, still on his whole "triumph of matter over spirit" kick.

And, not to mention, this one for the girl I'm making the scale mail miniskirt for:
http://th01.deviantart.net/fs47/300W/i/2009/228/2/0/Brass_Pirate_Belt_by_MetalArtisan.jpg
Though it's still the same pattern, this is made of brass, and not steel. This is belt is going to be part of the abovementioned miniskirt; said girl is a vegetarian, so normal leather belts are out. Instead, this swashbuckling number will be holding her skirt up.

I feel like I should also mention that chainmail belts are exceptionally effective if you ever feel the need to Pooty Tang someone:

What do you do with the slack? Is that how to put that? The bit of belt that's pulled through the buckle - does it just hang or does it stay nicely in the belt loop or what?

Ideally there is no slack - the buckle hooks into the last few links of the belt. If there is some, it tends to hang in a pretty ugly fashion.

The belt is here. The belt fits well. The belt is now controlling me. Seriously, the second I cinched the belt closed, I felt the eerie dark power emanate down my crotch into my nether regions, imbuing my junk with a mystical ability to totally kick ass. IT. IS. FUCKING. METAL.
