View Full Version : Pope Vs Condom use in Africa.

I just spotted this gem on Teletext and looked it up on the BBC website.

I realise I'm supposed to write a proper paragraph for posting in here, but with Steve's indulgence, I'm just going to post the link and tagline then let the sheer, monstrous retardation of what his 'holiness' is saying, grab you the face!!!

Jesus Wept, I mean, he really fucking wept....

Several EU states have criticised Pope Benedict for saying that the use of condoms could endanger public health and increase the problem of HIV/Aids.

We've done this before. Catholic countries in Africa preaching absitinence have lower aids rates than 'enlightened' countries preaching 'do what you want but wear a condom'.

Never mind. It's not like any of you faggots actually care how many black people die.

I don't exactly doubt you, but I'd like to see some sources on that, Bwana.

All it means anyway (assuming its true), is that people in Africa are more motivated by fear of being broiled in Hell for Eternity than teh AIDZ.

In a place where raping a virgin is thought to cure STDs and Witches are suspected of using magic to shrink penises, its probably little surprise that scary superstitions are a bigger sell than science.

I had a great idea while drunk regarding this problem.

Simply have the witchdoctors bless the condoms.

Hell, the companies could even pay them.

Man I was drunk.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and think that the Pope's lack of sexual education causes him to fail to realize that you should only use a condom once.

No I didn't, we had a thread on this before and the argument basically died when the disbelief died down and none of the ranting anti-Catholics could back up their point with statistics.

The real argument here has nothing to do with protecting people from AIDs. It's about secular humanists feeling instinctively uncomfortable with the idea of religiously mandated sexual self control.

That's a discussion worth having, but please, let's not bring feel-good junk quasi-science about saving lives into it. It's just not true.

I would classify "feel-good junk quasi-science" as the irresponsible act of telling people that condoms spread AIDS.

If a secular humanist started telling teenagers that quitting smoking would give them cancer you bet your sweet ass I would be outraged.

Africa's problems are propagated by ignorance.

The Pope is an ignorance propagator.

Damnit, foiled!

Oh, except you're quoting the Washington Post writing about a study in America, which doesn't talk about HIV transmission.

My post in the other thread gave the actual figures for HIV infection rates a range of countries, compared to proportion of the population who were Catholic.

Look, you want to believe that telling people abstinence is preferable to contraception. I want it to be true, because I like fucking. Unfortunately, there aren't third-world HIV statistics to support that proposition.

Cullion
23rd March 09, 02:46 PM
The Pope is an ignorance propagator.

Except that people taking his advice in Africa don't get HIV as often.

Look, I don't believe in God. But this is why I'm arguing:-

You're trying to argue about metaphysics and philosophy by trying to take a utilitarian approach using case studies of how believing certain things can cause suffering and illness...

But then ignoring the fact that the statistics in real African case studies don't support the point.

It's not a productive way to persuade traditionalist Catholics that their views are wrong.
It's just like the erroneous line of argument I pointed out in the 'God can't be real because he does mean things' thread.

Why not just argue with the philosophy of Catholicism directly?

HappyOldGuy
23rd March 09, 02:49 PM
My post in the other thread gave the actual figures for HIV infection rates a range of countries, compared to proportion of the population who were Catholic.

Which would prove exactly squat by itself. And some of the studies in my second link did address pregnancy and other STD transmisison rates, which are pretty relevant ways to measure the effectiveness of an anti AIDS program.

No, I am perfectly willing to listen to studies. No matter what they say. For example, studies that have looked at Uganda have found that the abstinence message did work. Because it made people use more condoms.

The problem is when you make comparisons with wealthy secular countries' patterns of sexual behaviour and how it is influenced by religious authority, and the different way in which religious authority may influence sexual behaviour in other nations.,
