Now THAT should be an Olympic sport!

FWIW, I dig ping-pong. Used to have a table when I lived outside the city and could afford the space. But then again, I also had a foosball table and an air hockey table and I didn't think those should be Olympic sports either.

What? Foosball? No, I'm half decent at that, but I agree, spin is essential. Now that you mention it, maybe it SHOULD be an Olympic sport, but players would need an Olympic standard beer to guzzle during matches.

Why do you fail at the olympics? SO MUCH FAIL!

Because:-

a) Your media don't report to you the stuff you're failing at. It's a 'positive thinking' thing. Y'know, like with your economy and your wars.

b) You have a large ethnically diverse population from whom to select genetically talented candidates for Olympic training. Mostly they aren't whitebread, physically puny office workers from your anxious middle class. You know what I'm talking about.

c) You spend an inordinate proportion of your wealth trying to prove you are the master race at anything involving physical competition. See point 1).

LOL

Don't even try to argue with Cullion about this. He's as right as he can be. Of course, maybe I'm agreeing with him because to date, Canada has been TOTALLY SHUT OUT of the medals.

I actually agree with the American media bias to showing only successes. Nothing sucks worse than tuning into CBC and watching the highlight reel of daily fail. Hell, I'd rather watch baseball than that.

Why do you fail at the olympics? SO MUCH FAIL!

If you're so wonderful, why do you have to brag about it so much? Smacks of insecurity if you ask me.

The US does well because a. it's a sports-friendly culture with lots of encouragement for young athletes and b. it's got lots of money. Other countries don't do so well because there's nowhere near as much investment or support.

Would your gold medallists do so well if they had to put up with the apathy and stinginess of Britain and other Western European countries, for example? There's no point having talent if there's no encouragement. Or if they weren't able to go to University on the back of sports scholarships? Would America be so successful if it was a small, poor third world country?

Far from being 'proof' of American superiority, what US Olympic success shows is that athletes need proper levels of support, and that's not forthcoming for the most part. China's success supports this even further - manic government investment and a must-do attitude in grooming every sportsman or sportswoman they have is paying dividends that are much greater than their pool of available talent would normally provide.

'Team GB' is also a case in point - lots of official support, but no one really gives two farts otherwise. Most of the British success stories have been down to the athletes themselves (qf. Steve Redgrave) rather than any help they've been given, and that's a a case in point. Otherwise, it's mediocrity all the way.

The 2012 Olympics are a huge white elephant already. Stratford, the part of London where most of the facilities are being built, is now a vast, polluted building site with occasional stabbings and shootings carrying on as before. And that's what it's going to be like when the Olympics are over too. The whole mess is already over budget. Public interest is low or none-existent. Everyone can think of better uses of the money. Team GB is for the most part crap, give or take some quality talent in its midst. It's mainly a cock-waving session for British politicians, to be ranked alongside other recent British success stories such as the Millenium Dome and Beagle 2. It's proof, in other words, that our government can't govern and loves pissing other people's money down the drain.

Oh, and lest we forget...

Yes, many. Some of them are international in nature, and some of them are enshrined in the US constitution. Both were ignored in this case. It was an act of unliateral aggression against a country presenting no threat which your govt. and ours repeatedly lied about in an attempt to justify. Criminal in intent, criminal under international law, criminal by US law.

Fuck this. I don't care if the Olympics are fucked, or non representational, or whatever. We choose to participate, but only to the extent of sending underfunded unprepared athletes over to the country to get their asses handed to them.

We need to decide if we are going to compete in the Olympics or not. If not, then fuck it - no funding for anyone. If so, then we need to spend some goddamn money! $300Million is nothing for a source of national pride. That's only what? Two thirds of the national defense budget? Fuck, we spent millions just to get flags to Canadians so they could wave them on Canada Day. We spent a billion on a gun registry that never worked and is now defunct. This is perhaps not the best use of tax dollars, but we've spent a hell of a lot more on a hell of a lot less.

Yay, Denmark is sucking less than its' Scandinavian neighbours.

Drama over the gold medal in the 49'er (sailing). Apparently the team's ship broke its mast right before the final heat, some Croatians were courteous enough to lend them their boat, Spainiards got slightly butthurt since it meant their shot at the gold would be destroyed, now they're trying to get them disqualified for using the Croatian boat.

Unfortunately Denmark has very few events it can dominate and rowing is pretty boring to watch anyway.

Looking forward to the men's handball (lol) quarterfinals vs Croatia (lol irony)as they will most likely destroy the Danes.
