First off, I know dick about cars. I know why they work and the principles behind the process, but the secret inner workings are still a mystery to me. That said, I know that a paint transfer on your brand new, white Mercedes M class will not only ruin your day, but also lower the resale value and bragging rights of such a fine automobile.

Much like superman, here's where science comes to save the day. An old thermosetting plastic made from melamine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melamine) and formaldehyde (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Formaldehyde) makes a unique porous foam when mixed with sodium-Bisulfite (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bisulfite) that can be used as an abrasive to remove hard to clean stains on smooth surfaces. Smooth metal surfaces like car bodies are perfect for it. Its likely you've heard of it by its product names like magic pen or magic eraser, but its generally known as melamine foam (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melamine_foam). This polymer makes an open cell lattice of very hard fibers, which scrub and reach into pits in the seeming smooth surface of your paint. This works much like sandpaper, only on a much smaller scale.

Having used in myself on numerous occasions, I highly recommend it for paint transfers, crayon, wax, magic marker and feminine itching.

an example of the structure involved here. Notice the shape too, beautiful.

I'm thinking you get paint from another car rubbed onto your car from either you or someone else driving like a douchebag.

The only way I can think of that happening involves smashing, and then paint is the least of your worries.

Minor fender benders, sideswipes, any contact at all really results in paint transfer.
Geez you guys never watched CSI?

yeah basically thats it. the number one annoying place to get one is grocery store parking lots. you know when some guy wings his door into the side of your car. melamine takes care of that kind of stuff, but obviously not dents.
