I remember reading about this in National geographic. 20 minute freefall, godDAMN.

That was pretty cool. I wonder how many of the scientists actually secretly thought he'd die, lol.

Holy crap. First its elephants drawing pictures, now this. It's been a good week for awesomeness.

My brother and I watched something on Discovery Channel (or one of the edutainment channels) years ago that featured a segment on this.

To this day, any time general bad-assery comes up in conversation, one of us still mentions it. That guy had giant, titanium balls.

"...the first man to reach the speed of sound WITHOUT an aircraft."

That is about ten shades of badass. Wonder if he noticed when he hit the sound barrier or if the air was too thin at that point.

Other than Chuck Norris' roundhouse kick, of course...

Wow. According to wikipedia, he made three (3!) freefalls, from 23,287 m, 22,769 m, and 31,330 m. And apparently he doesn't even hold the official Guiness Book World Record, which is held by Eugene Andreev, who free-fell from a height of 25, 457 m for 24,500 m.
