I knew what was going to happen and I still wept many very unmanly tears.

I got a few pricks of tears in my eyes when Nick shot himself in the head in The Deer Hunter. Usually it's films where others are crying that gets me going. That said, I really haven't been that shaken up by a movie in years.

What is this thing called "crying?"

Stick
23rd January 08, 12:57 AM
It's that thing you do when you go to sleep, Steve.

Ok, seriously:

Of course that was awhile ago.

But the last acting type thing to really make me bawl was in this thread (http://www.sociocide.com/forums/showthread.php?t=47999).

I mean, damn...

I can't say it's really a remarkable thing for me. Pretty much any movie that's supposed to make you cry, I will cry for, but I can suck it up if there's someone present I'd be embarassed crying in front of.

I cry at E.T. every single time. I also cry at the cease-fire in Children of Men, but that's just because all the gunfire stopped.

Seriously, the things that really get me are the Christian Children's Fund commercials. If I watch one of those through (and I'm paying attention) it just makes me feel so shitty because those are real kids. Of course, all I do about it is change the channel, so the next time it's on, I feel even shittier.

I have never kept it a secret that I am very emotional when it comes to art of all types. The list of motion pictures that made me break down would be endless. Give me a number and that is how many I will try to name.

Let's start with ten. That way you can include the specific scenes or reasons why they make you tear up.

One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest is the only one I can think of. Most tear-jerkers are so formulaic that you can guess what's going to happen, at which point crying over something so cliche seems a bit pointless.

Se7en affected me, but the emotion was deep disgust at how fucked up that movie was rather than sadness.

Seems to happen all the time...but coming up with 10 did prove to be difficult. Nothing is coming to mind right now.

In no particular order:

Back in the day, City Slickers made me weep, I was a kid, and Norman the cow was drowning. I thought how horrible for that little cow to have to die like that. Even though he was saved. Also, Land Before Time, when the little dinosaur licks the rock that has his shadow thinking it is his mother. That was just sick.

As of recently, The Notebook did it, Brokeback Mountain does it, and Million Dollar Baby did it. Ladder 42 was a bit of a tearjerker as well.

Big Fish was a good choice, though I did not quite weep over it.

I think that is all that is relevant at this point.

you must be young...KP2 used to cry because of Land Before Time also. You should have seen his reaction a couple of years ago when I sat down to watch Wrath of Khan with him. When Spock sacraficed himself for the good of the ship...he totally lost it.

See, critics didn't think Mel Gibson could play a Scotsman well, then he got drunk and started ragging on minorities. That showed them.

The Muppet Movie when Kermit sings "The Rainbow Connection." I had a hippy father and I think Muppet movies are the only thing my folks and I agreed on being good. Ever. (I should mention that when I was younger I watched Top Gun on tv with my dad and he cried when Goose died. I think it was my pacifist father crying at the loss of a life in training for war.)

The end of Best of the Best. I think any MA'ist here would agree. I know many other men that tear up every single time for that ending. Besides, name one other MA movie that has ever made anyone truly cry because of the artistic theme, and not just 'cause it sucked.
