CAIRO, Egypt (AP) -- Customs officers at Cairo's airport have detained a man bound for Saudi Arabia who was trying to smuggle 700 live snakes on a plane, airport authorities said.

The officers were stunned when a passenger, identified as Yahia Rahim Tulba, told them his carryon bag contained live snakes after he was asked to open it.
Tulba opened his bag to show the snakes to the police and asked the officers, who held a safe distance, not to come close. Among the various snakes, hidden in small cloth sacks, were two poisonous cobras, authorities said.

The Egyptian said he had hoped to sell the snakes in Saudi Arabia. Police confiscated the snakes and turned Tulba over to the prosecutor's office, accusing him of violating export laws and endangering the lives of other passengers.
According to the customs officials, Tulba claimed the snakes are wanted by Saudis who display them in glass jars in shops, keep them as pets or sell them to research centers.

Most likely a hoax. Not that people wouldn't smuggle rare animals, but they wouldn't tell people about it. And 700 snakes wouldn't fit in any kind of luggage. Earthworms, yes, snakes, no.

According to CNN and the Associated Press, it's not a hoax.

Exaggeration, then. If it isn't, I'd like to hire that guy to show me how to pack efficiently. 700 snakes in your carry-on bag, including two big-ass cobras? That's some excellent packing skills right there.

PS: Fuck CNN.

Greetings.

What does the average snake weigh? Even if these were small snakes, let's say 1/2 lb average, that would mean the guy is still trying to lug around a 350lb carry on....

Definitely sounds fishy to me.

edit - Actually, the article doesn't say they were ALL in the carry on. I guess he could've had a few suitcases full of snakes, but I'd think someone would check those or at least be suspicious when the bags hissed while being loaded...

For some reason, the thought of someone calmly vacuum packing snakes and cobras made me laugh really hard.

Business my ass! Clearly this terrorist got his idea from the movie and was planning to unleash those snakes on the plane so as to kill someone in witness protection.

Just as with 9-11 (inspired by MS Flight Simulator, amirite!?), this means we need to rethink society today; no longer can we permit this film makers to brain storm terrorist plots for the enemies of freedom to peruse and put into action.

Next thing you know, Al uaeda will be rigging a cruise ship to exploe if its speed drops below 30 knots!
