So, yeah.... like the title says.

Robert Rodriguez will helm the "Barbarella" redo for a 2008 Universal release.

The "Planet Terror" helmer is working with scribes Neal Purvis and Robert Wade on the remake of the 1968 film starring Jane Fonda as a futuristic mercenary. That version was produced by Dino De Laurentiis, who is producing the remake with Martha De Laurentiis.

Barbarella first appeared seven years earlier in a French comicbook written and illustrated by Jean-Claude Forest. De Laurentiis recently completed an acquisition deal with his son Julien (Daily Variety, April 12).

"I love this iconic character and all that she represents, and I'm truly excited by the challenge of inviting a new audience into her universe," Rodriguez said.

Dino De Laurentiis hinted at the flavor of the remake: "In our vision, the future is female, and I can't wait to introduce 'Barbarella' to a new generation of moviegoers," he said.

Purvis and Wade co-wrote "Casino Royale" and recently finished scripting the next installment in the Bond franchise, "Bond 22."

And here's a little more info while I'm at it.

Robert Rodriguez is making BARBARELLA... My Balls Just Exploded!!!

Harry here... this story just got posted on VARIETY and I grabbed my phone and called Rodriguez - "I told you it was the coolest thing ever!" before I even said a word.

Robert Rodriguez is making an R-rated BARBARELLA that is being written right now by the writers behind CASINO ROYALE - Neal Purvis and Robert Wade. With Dino De Laurentiis and Martha De Laurentis producing.

Robert is making this his adult sexy science fiction action adventure film. I've never heard him so jazzed about a project. When I called Robert, he was in Cannes and was in the midst of joyous conversation with "The Mexican Mafia" - aka Alfonso Cuaron and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu - who stole his phone to tease me anonymously. They're all so jazzed about this project for Rodriguez.

Robert is making the film for UNIVERSAL - and man... can you imagine. Robert grew up reading HEAVY METAL magazine and in all likelihood we'll see that sort of flavor mixed with that of the look of BARBARELLA- and he has no plan to make this a campy film. That this is going to shoot here... in Austin... Holy shit... This is going to be amazing! Oh - and this is Robert's next film!

And just in case you've never seen nor have any clue what Barbarella is- seriously..... he's gonna portray this seriously?- right, here are some videos.

I have an incredibly strong desire to eat some shrooms and watch this movie. My brain needs a good hard beating to keep it on it's toes.
