Spike Jones and his City Slickers

http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t67/BullshidoTrail/spike.jpg

I'm putting this guy and his band first because he's the most likeable of the bunch, and because he eventually covered most everyone else's songs. Spike Jones is an abberation among comedy musicians, in that he's both an actual musician and actually funny (Fuck you Weird Al).

David Grisman

An excellent mandolinist that doesn't use the instrument as a gimmick (Fuck you uhm, was it R.E.M.? I can't remember), he's worked with Jerry Garcia of Grateful Dead fame (check them out too, if you haven't) and jazz musician Martin Taylor (I'm Beginning to See the Light, which is really an ongoing mandolin solo). Noteworthy for producing bluegrass music with singers that don't need to shut their fucking mouth.

Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey

There's less that I can say about these two because I'm not a terminally boring Wikipedia article, except that I love Hawaiian War Chant.

Django Reinhardt

Amazing music, this guy's left pinky and ring finger were paralyzed after a fire. That makes him like, the Balto of guitarists.

Leo Kottke

This guy is sort of ugly so I didn't give a picture. Anyway, he's a really impressive guitarist. Imagine if, instead of masturbating on his guitar with music so technical it ceases to be music, Yngwie Malmsteem actually played music. Also, Leo isn't a total asshole.

Honorable Mention: Dominic Frasca

I've never listened to this guy, not even once. He just gets an honorable mention because of that guitar.

David Grisman and Jerry Garcia, "Sweet Sunny South" (http://rapidshare.com/files/28823441/Jerry_Garcia___David_Grisman_-_04_-_The_Sweet_Sunny_South.mp3)

Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, "Hawaiian War Chant" (http://rapidshare.com/files/28823934/Tommy_And_Jimmy_Dorsey_-_Hawaiian_War_Chant.mp3)

Django Reinhardt, "I've Got Rhythm" (http://rapidshare.com/files/28824180/07-I_Got_Rhythm.mp3)

I don't have a digital recording of Leo Kottke on hand, bummer.

Yes, Kotke; longtime fan. Saw him live just a few years ago, and he's still incredible.

That'd be Li Jie. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Li_Jie)

Oh, and as counter point; Hispanic chick playing Asian song.

The piece isn't in and of itself as long or as impressive as Paganini caprice, it's a take on a far simpler, traditional song. Anywho.

Was unable to rep you for that over on BS, so allow me to express my gratitude here.

I own a similar collection on vinyl called "Viper Jive" -- gonna sound funny without all those clicks and pops!
