I heard a Neon Indian song on the radio today (I think people call this shit 'Chillwave' or something, but the genre isn't yet really defined). Everything this guy makes has a real 80s vibe to it; I suspect quite deliberate, and they've added this really grainy casette-tape esque sound to it that just tops it all off.

i need to talk about how much i love this video right now.

the footage is of an old religious gathering, with a speaker whipping the faithful crowd into a fervour.

the speaker would obviously have been talking about how wonderful jesus and the afterlife is, and you can tell by the expression on his face that he really believes it. he appears to be feeling great pleasure and contentment.

what this video does, is transplant the religious narrative with something else. this awkward, bespectacled man is now telling the crowd about a love story. and they are enthralled, overwhelmed, dancing and collapsing at what he sings.

here are the lyrics in english:

I….started a fire for you
and now the whole forest is on fire
Now….I know what you are going to say
and it feels just like the first time
Come….let’s show them that it’s us two
but everyone already knows
Out….you run away with me
yeah can you hear them singing
*seizure*

As if….everything was predetermined
as the earth revolving round the sun
Who….would have been able to take my place
he simply doesn’t exist
They….talk of something wonderful
I’m there to tell the story
Large….larger than I ever imagined
the inside of my head is spinning
*seizure*
*repeat verse 1*

I came across this promo the other day and it stoked me out. Granted I grew up watching every damn skateboarding video and have one of the most impressive collections most fans of the genre have ever seen. That said, this is a cool short demo with good music and excellent production value and edition. If you guys like this at all I got some shit that will blow your damn lid off. I just wanna make sure you dudes can get stoked off a 13 minute promo before I try to share with you some films that have extremely special value to me and truly are time capsules of the few joyous parts of my troubled childhood and adolescence.
Enjoy XRglQ4y7cLM

And yes dickheads I do understand that from a technical standpoint of constantly pushing the envelope of progress in th goal of evolving skateboarding there is not so much of that going on right now. I hope you enjoy it because it is a celebration of youth. This stuff was my youth.

Danno, I should've known better than to click on Aphex Twin. I am ... someone... need eye bleach NAO!

I'm guessing the point of that video with the chicks turning into that guy was that he wasn't having sex with women but in some distorted fashion the "baller" was just having sex with his own ego.

But then, of course, since it's Aphex Twin... it got even WEIRDER and more DISTURBING. Perhaps the uglier the chicks got was to be a subversion of the normal rapper chick video showing the viewer how ugly they are for the lust and denigration of women. But then, I'm trying to rationalize having watched that; lol :-/.

basically it's a parody of gangster hip-hip videos. what you say about the objectification of women for example is on the right track.

made in 1999 and it still looks awesome. when i first saw it, i was hooked within the first few seconds, and when the limousine came in my jaw dropped, then i started laughing. sheer brilliance.

one of my favourite videos ever.

It's just the way Aphex Twin uses that same creeptastic smile in alot of their stuff. I really don't like that kind of stuff. But their message was pretty clear... something that I have to give them mad props for as artists.

in this video it's a device which corrupts the uber-gangster character.

he has superseded and super-pwned the african american guys who are acting all gangster and trying to pick up girls like they are just sex toys. his gangsterness is superior in every way. yet his face looks deformed, retarded and kind of evil.

I could be wrong but I thought that the "window licker" reference was to LSD

Maybe you never had these stateside but back in the day we used to get LSD called "window panes" which were just tiny translucent squares.

People used to put them on their tongues and they would dissolve very quickly. I used to know a guy who used to put them in his eye, under the lid. Said it made you come up immediately. *shudders*

Sorry bud that's bollox, window licker is a reference to kid's on the special bus licking the windows.

They also had huge ears. I'm not surprised that Joe left the band. He was always a little surly and introspective. I got the feeling he mostly just wanted to keep to himself. Good kid, though. Wasn't afraid to throw down when I made fun of his older brother, and I was a lot bigger than he was at the time.

Lols yeah they get that a lot. The singers sound alike. Chevelle definitely has an aggressive metal sound with a lot of energy that Tool hasn't touched though (from the few albums I've heard of them at least)... It's funny to read interviews and hear the groaning responses of both bands when people ask why their base sound sounds so much alike.

But heck, even the producer of Tool's albums produced Chevelle's last one... so it's not like they are denying it.

In this last record I was noticing a particular departure from their usual sounds though. I noticed intros that sounded like they could belong in a Metallica song, greater range of vocals (higher), some almost-anthemic songs, and hell they even had a guitar solo in one of the songs... which is exceedingly rare for a Chevelle song. It was hit or miss but most of the album was hit for me. I think they should keep up the progresion on their unique sound. Hopefully good things will come!

Friend: Seriously? They are such copiers. X band did it first.
Me: So you're saying Y band is bad music?

Your goodwill should not be stifled by snob friends. But one who adored a specific weird band will not generally appreciate people doing similar but more commercial music 10 years later. Where were they when those sounds were new and unexplored? That's too easy!
