My old man introduced me to Pop Will Eat Itself ages ago, but I've got these few stuck deep in my noggin.

Pop Will Eat Itself - Can U Dig It?

Very clever sampling, plus it's just plain awesome. They name-check their favourite stuff, lots of which is really cool. Alan Moore knows the score!

I really like old video game music redone with real instruments for some reason. Probably nostalgia or something. Lucky for me there's some talented people that like it too. Some old Castlevania stuff:

Jim Jarmusch's "Broken Flowers" (Which was ok, but not anything special)

I was disappointed: another "Lost In Translation" knockoff featuring Bill Murray as Baby Boomer Babbitt In The Age Of Viagra. He's great at that -- his performance in "Rushmore" was simply brilliant -- but jeez. Was hoping for something better from Jarmusch.

EuropIan
16th September 08, 07:37 AM
I agree..It only becam good at fifteen minuttes before the end. And the end was meh.

However the soundtrack, like the soundtracks in all Jarmusch's movies, was definately above average.

I always find Frusciante's solo stuff hit-and-miss. I heard Murderers and thought the riff was crazy kickass, I looked up a few other popular ones and didn't really like them. Mostly his best stuff was with the Chili Peppers. Ironically he's a better singer than Anthony is/was, but I think Anthony's sound fits better.

I'm listening to a fair bit of Tricky lately, I really like his work. He was solid in Massive Attack and his solo [although technically he pretty much always worked with other people] stuff is excellent. He calls himself a 'wannabe' and I can understand that; he shows very clear influence from several sources, but some of his stuff is very uniquely his own and very trip-hop.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lWIeVTs94rI
Evolution Revolution Love is a little more hip-hop. Note the whispering vocals from Tricky, it's kinda his thing.

[1] "YATSUra" is the plural form of "yatsu," which is a slang term for "you." It can be downright rude and offensive to use. Something like "Those scum, bastards, low-lives, scoundrels," etc. [2] "RASSE" and "RASSERA" don't really mean anything. This chant is shouted during the Nebuta festival held from August 2-7 in Aomori. It's supposed to shake away the sleepiness of summer.

Excellent amature music video for Kids by MGMT (I'm in love with Abby just like everyone else is) :

bIEOZCcaXzE

Info from YouTube-

Article about the video: http://www.canyon-news.com/artman2/pu...

About Abby and Rafael: www.myspace.com/abrafever

Just to set the story straight: the facepainted kids in the video are a boy and girl from Los Angeles, two friends of mine, names Raf and Abby. MGMT was not involved in the making of this video, however, they became involved down the line.
The story goes like this:
December 2007: Rushing to make a due date for a USC Music Video class, I ask my friends Raf and Abby to appear in my video. I like the way they bounce off of each other despite completely different personality types, and think they both have interesting faces. Raf didn't want to shave so I didn't push him. We shot in one night, I cut overnight, turn it in and call it the worst thing I've done so far.
January 2008: On a whim one night while visiting home in Austin, Texas, I throw the video on Youtube just for kicks.
April 2008: Ray Tintori, who has directed 3 official videos for MGMT, finds my fan video online and invites myself and my two actors to come to New York to appear in MGMTs next official video for Electric Feel.
May 2008: We go to New York and have a great time on the set with the band and all their friends.

Message from Abby, the facepaint girl in the video:

We are celebrating over a year since Jon posted this video!
We never would have thought this would get over 8 million hits, I never even thought it would make it on the internet.
I've put together some commemorative T-shirts for anyone who had enjoyed the video and wants to support. http://www.cafepress.com/FacepaintTshirt
Thanks so much!
