So DA, can a philosopher control fire with music? And don't give me any of that "there is no fire!" bullshit, either.

That was pretty cool.

And I thought that you being a metal head and liking physics was just a fluke!

While that is cool, all it is really is a real life version of media player. And Bill GAtes had his flunkies invent that years ago.

You should have brought out the Tesla Coils:

I've seen something like that before, cool, no dancing tho.

Oh, and it seems that links need to be posted for stuff from YouTube (besides the frist post here in Vids and MP3s, not a problem with Google for some reason).

I had the chance to make a tesla coil 2 years ago, but decided on a coil gun instead. It shot small nails across the room and was made out of a Capri Sun straw, some wire, and like 6 flash cameras (the $7 Safeway disposable cameras) strung together to provide the power from the flash.

Tell me you've got video!

I had pictures, but I think they all got deleted when I reformatted my HDD.

Also, it got confiscated by my professor so he could show it to future classes.

Damn. I need to find a picture of it somewhere... Even if I had it, I couldn't video it, because I am incompetent. But the pictures were pretty cool.

EDIT: Yah, they all got deleted. I thought "ok, I have my music... I have my pride/ufc videos... ok, that's all I'll ever need."

Even though I had a whole stash of cool pictures that I accumulated over the last few years. It really sucks. I'll contact my prof. and see if he still has any.

Just build a new one, and instead of a straw as a barrel, use a drain pipe this time.......

No you shitheads. That costed me $80. And it was fairly weak.

If I increased the size of the firing tube, I would REALLY need to increase my juice that I supply. Unless someone can buy me one or two of the 32microfarad caps (http://www.amazing1.com/capacitors.htm), then I won't do anything.

I'd have to charge that thing with a car battery... I could definately do some damage with that. To myself, even... but for your amusement, I would definately do it.

If I have to make another project for my E&M class and get stuck with a coil gun, then I'll do it.

If I don't have to do a coil gun, then I'll do something like a tesla coil or a rail gun or something. E&M is one of the coolest subjects ever, so no matter what I pick it will be fun and amusing.

It basically shot needles across the room. It was harmless. Unless I was working on it. Then I got shocked numerous times.

Yeah, I can't wait until then. I think that might be next year. This year I think I'll only be studying shitty stuff. Then next year I might get to do labs on it. If I have to make a senior project, I'll probably do something like that. The cool part is that the school can refund you some percentage of your cost if you have the receipts, so I'd definately go all out.

Back then we didn't even have a good camera. I bought my mom a decent $400 camera this year for Mammy's day, but before then we had something from the 80's. Yeah. Next time, though, definately.

When my dog sees my dad go into the upstairs bathroom he bolts outside because he thinks it's bath time. Is my dog a philosopher? But guess what? He can't vibrate a tube and control fire with music.

That's not Thought.

Thought is the self-justifying infinite necessity of logic.

DAYoung

Pretty close, actually. Plato certainly thought so. Galileio thought that the book of the universe was written in mathematics. I don't agree (because it's not self-justifying in quite the same way), but it's close.

I guess one of the big questions in life is "what is thought?"

Can it be explained by math? It would be cool if it wasn't.

I doubt you'd like Hegel's answer.

As for mine, the neurological and psychological processes of thought can be illuminated by mathematics, but thought per se can neither be reduced to them, nor to mathematics.

If you were continuing a conversation that we were having, what I meant is that the U bookstore will give you a percentage back at the end of each quarter (I believe it's at the end and not year round) if you have your receipts.

Receipts for textbooks, books for fun, gifts, hell, even coffee I think. Have to be a student of the U dub tho, so that's why I give them to my employees if I happen to shop at any of their stores.

So there is at least that bonus for ya...

WarPhalange
10th October 06, 12:16 AM
I know I know. They give you 8% back from your purchases. So I spent $350 on books this quarter (only because I already had 1 $150 book that I didn't have to buy) and I'll get ~$29 back at the end. Awesome, huh?

I have 4 chapters, body, mind, soul and society. Spent today writing 2k on the soul of artificial life forms. Have to attend a social and then go back to at least another k before I sleep.

Haraway isn't a cyberneticist, she's a feminist who used a metaphor, most people can't see that. I'm tempted to see if I can hand a project in without mentioning her.

Don't get all huffy.

Anyone who's actually read the key text knows it's a metaphor (I've said as much in one of my book chapters).

But it doesn't mean your examiners won't want her noted (if only to show mastery).

No, more on the motive of the base type as applies their function and portrayal. See transhumans = nightmarish mythics, cyborgs = Nietzschian moralistics whilst replacing a deity and artificial sentiences being preordained to extremes, genocide, control etc. Not the 'soul' of the creature, not enough room, the 'soul' of the representation.
